Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 24, 2015 10:48 pm Starting to built my house in SA with Hickinbotham (house and land package). Have a window question to all who can help. This company uses Boral or Southern Star windows. I have visited both suppliers today. Asked them all one question. How can I change the glass in my window from single glass to double-glazing after handover. Both suppliers said: no problem it's easy just ask any glazier who does double-glazing. They gave me brochures and sent me on my way. So I went to the glazier who was recommended by one of the suppliers. The guy from the glaziers looked at my brochures and said that it's impossible to change the glass into double-glazing with these frames, because he cannot take the frame apart, especially where there is no opening part (awning window). It means that the cavity where the glass is in the frame, it's too narrow to hold double-glazing of 18 mm. As long as I understand the glazier is right, there is no space for double-glazing to be put in the frame. He told me to ask my builder and upgrade my glass to 6 mil laminated glass, that would be better than nothing, and when installed to apply some form of film on it. Also the glazier told me that the price for double-glazed block of 18mil is around the 300 dollars, that sent me into a knockdown. Even my builder quotes less. Is it so expensive? So my question is: who is right, the supplier or the glazier. I'm lost here. But my question is who is right. Re: Double glazing question 2Sep 24, 2015 11:57 pm Why not ask your builder to credit you for the builder supplied glass and you get the window company to supply and install double glazing of your choice. The route you are suggesting is wasteful and expensive. Re: Double glazing question 3Sep 25, 2015 12:54 am AussieMark Why not ask your builder to credit you for the builder supplied glass and you get the window company to supply and install double glazing of your choice. The route you are suggesting is wasteful and expensive. Builder says that he can supply only the windows that his suppliers have and no other windows are aloud. Unfortunately for me that is a house and land package and I cannot get rid of the builder, so I have to play by his rules, but I'm trying to avoid paying him more than I should, if possible. Re: Double glazing question 4Sep 25, 2015 2:11 am Why not ask the builder if he can credit you for his windows and you pay margin to him for the windows you supply. I think that would still work out cheaper. I think while you may be able ot find the profiles that match double glazing you should also ensure that other benefits are not compromised. for example are the builder supplied windows thermally broken, do they seal as well etc. All of my windows are tilt and turn which are very different to what would have been supplied. The difference between builder supplied and owner supplied was 10K for the entire house. Cheers Re: Double glazing question 5Sep 25, 2015 3:12 am AussieMark Why not ask the builder if he can credit you for his windows and you pay margin to him for the windows you supply. I want that block of land, if it wasn't the case, I wouldn't sign with this builder. I'll try to fight it, because I still have a few days before signing the building contract, but I don't think they will let me have my way. Re: Double glazing question 7Sep 29, 2015 3:51 am The windows have their own warranty by law. If a defect was encountered one would have to establish where the fault lay. Builders margin added to double glazing would be a killer. I do not really see why builders do not allow. My window supplier gave steel inserts to be bricked in and then simply installed the windows. No dramas so far, touch thermally broken aluminium..... Re: Double glazing question 8Sep 29, 2015 4:51 am Hey Barnes, We signed with Statesman same company as Hickinbotham. We didn't build with them in the end and forwent our deposit. They're prices are cheap for that very reason, you can have anything you want as long as it's what we are suppling.... They get big discounts for volume. They won't build your own house plan ether but allow changes to their plans. I would doubt vary much they will allow double glazing if they don't supply it, but hey you might get what you want. 'Free' upgrade offers and packages that's their style. If you have your heart set on that land then I guess there will have to be some trade offs for you. We are now building with Sterling, they are very flexible with the affordable price tag also. Unfortunately it cost's big to do the right thing, the government should just make double glassing compulsory then price will then come down. That's another story though... I don't fully understand, do Hickinbotham offer double glazing and it's to expensive or do they not offer double glazing at all? Our Build Here: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=74037&p=1255246#p1255246 This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
