Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jun 29, 2015 8:22 pm Hi guys,
I'm building in Sydney South West and thinking to install Velux skylight in the main bathroom and kitchen. Need some suggestions. Plan : - Bathroom (2x3m) : 550x980mm (manual openable) - Kitchen: 550x1180mm (fixed) - Double glazing - Flared shaft I'm building new home with a project builder and thinking to install skylight after handover. The roof is truss based. Just wondering about the following things - - Are the sizes ok for the room sizes? - The skylights will be in the South-East part of the house. Would there be any issue with sunlight, heating/cooling ? - Flared light shaft : is it possible to flare all four sides of the light shaft? - Roof modification required to fit the skylight or flared light shaft? - What kind of insulation recommended for the light shaft? Thanks in advance. Re: Velux Skylight - need suggestion 2Jun 29, 2015 9:57 pm I have 3 velux windows in my living area and one in my main ensuite. the ones which open are electric and have electric sun block also. I am having it done through the builder and the cost is a lot of most but not much more than arranging post handover. I would speak with Velux as the cost of the window is about a quarter of the cost. Velux will also be able to answer all the questions you have. Re: Velux Skylight - need suggestion 3Jun 30, 2015 11:26 pm Thanks AussieMark. Since I'm doing it after building handover, my only concern is about the truss roof structure as it can't be modified to install the flared light shaft. Do you know if you have insulation around the shaft or what kind? Building Livingstone23 with Eden Brae Homes Re: Velux Skylight - need suggestion 4Jul 01, 2015 12:45 am I have all my shafts build into the roof. I would actually ask how much through the project builder as mine are around 16K all in and velux said that was about what they would charge. The difference may be the additional labour required to retrofit. Not sure how they wrap the shaft to be honest as I never thought about it until right now. I do know that the windows are double glazed. Give Velux a call and see what they say. Load the images on photobucket and post then up here so we don't have to go to a third party site . - Any skylight will leak a little heat in Winter but the benefits of increased light in those rooms far outweighs any negatives. - Yes you can but in a smaller room I'd probably just have them flared on two opposing sides. - Yes you will as the trusses will be 600 -900mm apart. This will all have to be taken into account by the truss manufacturer before they are delivered on site. - Same as your ceiling insulation. Stewie Re: Velux Skylight - need suggestion 6Jul 09, 2015 9:23 pm Thanks Stewie. That helps. I have uploaded the plan in photobucket and also linked it in the original post. The red rectangles are skylight. Not quite sure if kitchen skylight is in best position. Basically I wanted sun light on the cooktop while cooking and also wanted to have sun light in the benchtop. I checked with the builder, the roof trusses are 600mm apart. So, that means I can't flare out two sides other than top and bottom. My builder said they don't do insulation for skylight. But I think it's an important thing? Re: Velux Skylight - need suggestion 7Jul 10, 2015 9:53 am I actually agree with the builder. Seeing as the positioning of both in the kitchen and bathroom is close to the ridge you will end up with a relatively long shaft so I'd probably just have the sides coming straight down. Maybe the only one I'd vary is the kitchen one flared out on the right hand side. What is the pitch of your roof and which way is North?
Stewie Re: Velux Skylight - need suggestion 9Jul 10, 2015 4:25 pm if you do it through the builder you can definitely flare all four sides as that is what I have on my installations. It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it. Similar to what you see from your western windows 3 19991 No the fireplace doesn’t work.
