Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 May 13, 2015 1:44 pm I want to replace windows / doors on my 1960s house with something more modern looking / energy efficient. I've initially set my eyes on thermally broken aluminum (TBA) frames however, so far I've visited 5 show rooms asking about TBA frames but I've been told the same thing, i.e. "they are too bloody expensive and I've never sold one before here in Sydney".
Is it because TBA is mainly for colder environments where Sydney just isn't cold enough to deserve its sophistication and added cost (I've been told that it potentially can double the cost on frames)? If putting aside glazing options, would non TBA frames perform much worse than TBA frames during winter / summer? Also I've been trying to decide whether to go with 6.38mm comfort plus or 4mm/12 air/4mm clear float glass double glazing. Cost wise they seem pretty equivalent, DG is a little bit more expensive. From my reading around the web it seems that CP is expensive and doesn't work as well as advertised and bloody hard to clean and might potentially grow mold in between the two layers. But would DG be subject to mold as well? And again, for cities like Sydney where winter is about say 5 degree celsius, and summer is 40 degree, should I go CP or DG (clear float)? Re: Thermally broken aluminum with double glazing smart glas 2May 13, 2015 2:38 pm I am using Casver and they absolutely do double thermal break aluminium because that's what I am getting. Not sure of the salesman's source when he says you only need dg when near a highway. Lots of suppliers for dg and a few are members of this site. I would supply Sydney except that thermally broken really needs more care during installation. We are building an extension and upgrading the existing house. We are in Sydney and planning on having double glazing on all doors and windows. We get frost at our house, because we are at the bottom of a 'dell' We are choosing only awning and casement windows. We have chosen a large Bifold door system for the lounge / rear of house and have no choice but to have a sliding door system to the side courtyard. We are currently looking at which companies - visited Airlite and Rylock. We are decided against Comfort Plus at the moment due to cleaning issues. I went to the WERS site and printed out some of the companies ratings for the exact same window to compare cooling, heating, efficiency etc We are leaning towards Rylock and have asked for a quote. What info have you discovered? This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
