Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 01, 2015 7:50 am To keep costs down, I am looking at the option of taking all internal doors off of the project builders price and buying / fitting my own after handover. I would have thought this would be a easy job but my father has concerns that it may be more complicated. Builder will only provide standard flat panel doors. If I want anything with grooves it will be a so called "upgrade". My father also mentioned something about pre-hung? Can anyone here offer up experience / thoughts? Re: Supplying Own Doors After Handover? 3Mar 02, 2015 3:11 am i do not think you will save much by doing your own doors after handover., i would get a quote to do the doors after handover as you will also need to have them painted then hung, then ask the builder how much to take the doors off the price. then ask for a price of the upgraded doors. i upgraded my doors and added approx 40 a door to cost. Re: Supplying Own Doors After Handover? 4Mar 02, 2015 6:05 am These days a lot of doors do come pre-hung and it is relativly easy to swap doors if the builders basic door is already a pre hung door. Not pre-hung and it's a lot harder. I have hung several doors in the past and there is a fair bit of skill and time involved. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Supplying Own Doors After Handover? 5Mar 02, 2015 6:50 pm If your builder uses prehung doors as previously suggested its not a hard job for someone with reasonable carpentry skills to remove them and re fit new doors. Have you looked at the option of simply upgrading with the builder? Or have them fit the flush panel doors but take the painting out of the contract. That way if you do buy your own doors you should be able to easily sell the old ones. Re: Supplying Own Doors After Handover? 6Mar 03, 2015 9:47 am So what is pre-hung? Is that with hinges already fitted or something? Cheers, Paul (& Lisa) Parkhill 36 by ClarendonHomes in Coomera Retreat H1 Build Thread And Blog Building Blogs List - Go Ahead And Add Yours!! Re: Supplying Own Doors After Handover? 7Mar 03, 2015 9:29 pm With pre-hung the hinges are fitted and the locks drilled. You should be able to knock out the hinge pins from the existing doors and push the pins back with the new door in place The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Supplying Own Doors After Handover? 8Mar 04, 2015 8:20 am Oh ok that sounds cool. So I would imagine if both doors are "pre-hung" then the hinges are located the same to be able to do that? Never thought the was so much for a door lol. I'm sure people replace old doors every day and don't have problems. But then I guess if it's a old home then new notches for hinges wouldn't bother anyone. Hi Mofflepop, I would recommend finding a building designer to prepare plans, they should design to your specified budget. The benefit is you can tender the project out… 9 21024 yes it does, you've just not understood it. theres a difference. 4 5707 Your house should come in "as new" condition.
