Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 15, 2015 5:25 pm I am about to redo my house in pvcu windows. Can anyone tell me whether it is worth getting double glazing on just the side of my house with a noisy street and single glaze the rest? Re: Pvcu windows 2Jan 15, 2015 6:24 pm If you have East or South facing windows they should be double glazed as you loose a lot of heat through windows facing those directions. I would still get it everywhere but if you're strapped for cash I'd do that. Re: Pvcu windows 3Jan 15, 2015 6:25 pm I am in Queensland and don't have heating or cooling in the house, this is only to do with noise reduction Re: Pvcu windows 5Jan 15, 2015 7:32 pm So if I have the double glazed on the street side, but not the others, I was just wondering if the difference would be noticeable enough to make it worth the extra cash Re: Pvcu windows 7Jan 16, 2015 8:55 am You may want to look at sound proofing solutions. I recall reading that if you can get the windows to have a very tight seal then that will also stop a lot of the noise bleed. Double glazed tilt and turn windows will stop a lot of sound and also have a tight seal. To sound proof the gap between the glass has to be quite large to increase the amount of sound that is blocked. Re: Pvcu windows 8Jan 16, 2015 5:41 pm Any reason why you want PVC windows if you are not interested in the thermal aspects? Aluminium double glazed should do the job if it is only a noise issue. They are beautiful Re: Pvcu windows 10Mar 03, 2015 4:07 pm Double glazing will make a very big difference, for example our standard double glazed window stops 34.5 dB... the thicker the glass the better, and it is best if each pane of glass has a different thickness... e.g. 6mm glass, 12mm air and 4mm glass. So we achieve Rw 39 (that's 39 dB stopping power) with 8.76mm x 9mm x 4mm As above, sealing is very important, and aluminium will be as effective as uPVC.
