Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 14, 2015 11:23 pm Hi All, first post here. Looking at windows for a second storey addition. Have come across the BCA requirements for Kid's window safety in bedrooms. Not sure exactly what is meant by a climbable element. So that is my question what is a climbable element below a window. Does it include a skirting board? What else does it mean? If you have a blank wall and a skirting board less than 150mm can you have a removable device that restricts the opening of the window rather than a permanent restriction device. Thanks all Re: Climbable Element 2Sep 15, 2015 8:15 am Climbable element means a handhold/foothold/step that are within 800mm of each other. I wouldn't say a typical skirting board counted as a foothold. As I understand the regs the device can't be removable, The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Climbable Element 4Sep 26, 2015 10:26 pm I'm looking into this as well. We just moved into a brand new rental and all of the upstairs windows only open 85mm max. As far as I read, I thought we were allowed 125mm maximum. We don't have any climbable elements unless you count the window sill itself. I've emailed the property manager to ask to at least get them to open to the 125mm mark at least. It seems erring too much on the side of caution to have it at 85mm. At that width, the window does not even open beyond the exterior wall of the house. |
