Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jun 03, 2008 12:17 am Hi,
I want to put a sliding window in the house we are building. The size is 1800 wide x 1800 high, but all the window books I am looking in show a bar across the window at 600 high. I dont want this... can anyone suggest a manufacturer that will do the window without that bar... is it becuase it might flex? maybe I need to have toughened glass because of the size?? Thanks....... Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 2Jun 03, 2008 3:54 am do you mean the patterned print-on bar that goes across the window, like in this pic of my sliding doors here?
This is a legal requirement (in SA anyway) for saftey reasons - I presume by that they mean so no-one can walk into the glass without realising it is there when door is shut ( because we all have perfectly clean clear glass at all times, don't we ) http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/HPIM0736-1.jpg Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 3Jun 03, 2008 10:17 am No not like this... these are sliding doors, I am talking about sliding windows..... and the bar is a solid aluminium/wooden bar.
Thanks, Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 4Jun 03, 2008 11:57 pm oops, so silly of me
yes, indeed that is a sliding door Note to self: do not attempt to answer questions on forum when staggering past computer on way to bed at 3:00 am Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 5Jun 04, 2008 12:08 am Helyn oops, so silly of me yes, indeed that is a sliding door Note to self: do not attempt to answer questions on forum when staggering past computer on way to bed at 3:00 am Paula Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 6Jun 04, 2008 6:11 am i think its a personal preference, but not adding that 'bar' will add weight when opening that window ( too heavy for children when sliding , maybe?)
also will it be a oxxo/xoox or ox/xo window ? (split from the middle or slide from the right or left ?) cheers Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 7Jun 04, 2008 9:43 am It would be an xo window.
It seems from talking to some window companies, that they cannot make an 1800 high window without the bar . I really dont want that look, although I could have it with the bar 600 from the top instead of the bottom. However, they have said I could have a door instead of a window which wont need the bar ?? so I dont know why they can make one and not the other.... I might just have a door even though it is a window.... Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 8Jun 04, 2008 10:32 am If they make sliding doors with out bars, surely they can make windows as well.
Maybe it has something to do with the support for the window, it may need to be stronger, like the surround of a sliding door. Paula Re: 1800 High sliding windows without cross bar 9Jun 08, 2008 2:59 am hi chatterbox. i have the same concern myself. I just talked to the draftsman about our windows and he said that you can't have a 1800h x 1800w sliding window with no bar in the middle. But you can have it removed and just have a 1200h x 1800w. We ended up with the original 1800h x 1800x so there is more view to the outside. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Please suggest a solid quality swivel bar towel holder in bathrooms & bedrooms from… 0 1355 This certainly doesn't look good.
