Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 10, 2014 12:01 pm When we built recently we had the builder put in a double door frame for our theatre room so we could add the doors later down the track. We are not at that point. The doors we have picked are 5 lite french doors that will be painted the same white as our door frame and the rest of the doors in the house. We want to get handles to match the rest of the doors, Gainsborough Ambassador lever handles. I have found we can buy there at Bunnings. My first question is, are regular door handles okay for double doors? Do both doors need the passage lever sets or should one have that and the other non operational door just have a dummy lever set? For installation, will it be difficult if both doors have the passage lever sets? Second question, the first quote we got for doors included recessing the doors as they are double doors. The second and better quote say they do not recess the doors but provide a mushroom stop. From trying to research what a mushroom stop it, it appears to be a rubber stop thing that goes at the bottom of the non operational door to stop the other door. Are these okay? I have not ever heard of them before but if they do the job then I have no problems with them. DH is a carpenter so will hang the doors himself but he is a roof carpenter so does not normally do a lot of things with doors. Re: Double Doors for Theatre room - Handles and mushroom sto 2Jul 10, 2014 1:58 pm One dummy handle, one passage set. Mushroom stop is a T (or mushroom) in profile shaped long strip - the vertical of the T goes along the inner edge of one door, the cross section then stops the other door swinging past it. You need a top slide-bolt-thing to hold the door with the mushroom stop and dummy handle in place when shut too. I have a set like this we added to my current house, but we got it as kit(?) from doorsplus, they supplied the frame, hinges, doors, bolt, mushroom stop... I think that was everything! My media room has a pair of 820 doors with dummy handles on both no mushroom stops just a 3-4mm margin between, and ive used the magnetic catch where one recesses in the top of the door and one in the jamb. Works fine. Re: Double Doors for Theatre room - Handles and mushroom sto 4Jul 10, 2014 11:13 pm mgilla Is there any need to have a passage set on the door anyway? Well not having a gap between double doors will aid soundproofing for a start plus a magnetic catch will mean toddlers and dogs can simply push the door open if you have the room closed off. I also find magnetic catches a pain to open and close quietly depending on the strength of the magnet. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. You obviously dont have the rubber bumpers on the door stop so they dont bang when the magnet grabs. The sound proofing is negligible unless your using solid doors and soundproof walls. And yes its a pain in the bum when the dog barges in mid movie without knocking, but hey the sun came up this morning so its not all bad. Everyone has different needs and what is or isn't important to you is different for someone else. For people making an effort to soundproof with insulation, double thickness plasterboard and various sound treatments then yes, a gap in the doors makes a difference. Others may like to be able to close off the room in the day to keep curious toddlers out. And even with rubber stops on doors the act of releasing or engaging a strong magnetic catch can make the entire door shake introducing more noise than the bang of the door against the catch. I'd personally use a passage set but hey if you like a magnetic catch and no mushroom stop then by all means knock yourself out. If we were all the same life would be boring.
