My media room has a pair of 820 doors with dummy handles on both no mushroom stops just a 3-4mm margin between, and ive used the magnetic catch where one recesses in the top of the door and one in the jamb. Works fine. Well not having a gap between double doors will aid soundproofing for a start plus a magnetic catch will mean toddlers and dogs can simply push the door open if you have the room closed off. I also find magnetic catches a pain to open and close quietly depending on the strength of the magnet. You obviously dont have the rubber bumpers on the door stop so they dont bang when the magnet grabs. The sound proofing is negligible unless your using solid doors and soundproof walls. And yes its a pain in the bum when the dog barges in mid movie without knocking, but hey the sun came up this morning so its not all bad. Well you asked if there was a need so I responded. Everyone has different needs and what is or isn't important to you is different for someone else. For people making an effort to soundproof with insulation, double thickness plasterboard and various sound treatments then yes, a gap in the doors makes a difference. Others may like to be able to close off the room in the day to keep curious toddlers out. And even with rubber stops on doors the act of releasing or engaging a strong magnetic catch can make the entire door shake introducing more noise than the bang of the door against the catch. I'd personally use a passage set but hey if you like a magnetic catch and no mushroom stop then by all means knock yourself out. If we were all the same life would be boring.
