Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 19, 2014 7:10 pm We have some timber windows that push outwards from the bottom. Hubby put some CRC or similar on the hinges to make the windows open smoothly (I thought the windows opened just fine before he did it) and now the windows just flop down closed when we try to open them. We have to use a stick to keep them open. Is there any way of getting the CRC out of the hinges or perhaps putting talc onto the hinges to stop them flopping down please. We don't really want to buy new hinges seeing as they were OK before the spray went on them. Anyone got any suggestions please. Jean. Re: Push out windows that keep flopping down 2Mar 20, 2014 6:46 am It contains silicone, so will be difficult to remove entirely. You appear to have friction stays, and your hubby just eliminated the friction... I suggest a wash with hot water and plenty dishwashing detergent, do it 2-3 times, then rinse thoroughly... especially the parts that are in close contact... If that doesn't work, then you may need to remove the stays to clean them properly. It was WD40 and not CRC that was used on the hinges. Firstly we tried detergent - no success, then metho - no success. We then tried turps and soon saw a bit of improvement. After a week of using turps on the hinges every day we now have windows that stay open. I hope this helps anybody else who has the same problem. How long is a "long period"?
