Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 16, 2014 4:31 pm Hello, I would like some advice concerning an upcoming windows and doors purchase. I am in the process of renovating a 1960s full brick house in Sydney and plan to replace all existing timber windows with new aluminum units. Firstly, I want some opinions as to whether double glazing is a good option or does single glaze with the appropriate glass treatment offer the best value/performance for Sydney climate? Secondly, I have two large openings – one 4.5mtr wide and another 3.0mtr. I am wondering whether bifolds would be a good idea? I certainly like the idea that bifold doors are able to “get out of the way” and will not impede the connection of living and terrace areas. However, bifold double glaze doors, I assume, are considerably heavier than single glaze bifold doors. Are they, therefore, likely to present problems over time? I guess I am asking whether bifold doors are as robust as sliding doors in the longer term? Am I better off to either choose single glaze bifolds or double glaze sliding doors in order to reduce the weight and load? Thirdly, what opinions are there about the various types of windows and doors? I would think that any window or door with a rubber seal (e.g. bifold door or awning/casement window) would offer better resistance to air infiltration and therefore have better insulating properties than other types e.g. sliding or double hung that only have flimsy brush seals.. Thank you in advance for thoughts/suggestions. Re: Double glaze in Sydney? Window & door types? 2Mar 28, 2014 7:29 am I think that Sydney is considered a moderate climate zone with both heating and cooling. I am a believer in double glazing but it also depends on your habits - if you open the windows all winter there is no point. It is really a matter of comfort. You may find the results you want simply by changing to a performance glazing and using tint on certain aspects. I recently opened up the back of my house which is a 1960's home. all the windows are timber but I decided to go with Aluminium thermally broken frame so I would have less maintenance but still thermal comfort. - also given the renovation the aluminium frame suited the open concept. I struggled between bifolds vs sliding stacker doors. In the end I went for sliding doors as I felt the seals were better. I upgraded the seals to q-lon seals as opposed to mohair seals I am sure you could get any seal you want in the window/door if you asked for it. I have seen bifolds that don't have great seals along the top and bottom. I also liked that the sliding doors were easier to open up than bifolds - again personal opinion. good luck Re: Double glaze in Sydney? Window & door types? 3May 24, 2015 12:17 am So I am interested in what you finally bought Baron Bling? We are building an extension and upgrading the existing house. We are in Sydney and planning on having double glazing on all doors and windows. We are choosing only awning and casement windows. We have chosen a large Bifold door system for the lounge / rear of house and have no choice but to have a sliding door system to the side courtyard. We are currently looking at which companies - visited Airlite and Rylock. Whom did you eventually go with? Thoughts/ Suggestions? Re: Double glaze in Sydney? Window & door types? 4May 25, 2015 10:03 pm Hi HoplessRomantic I recent completed a reno and extension in Sydney. Rylock supplied my double glazed windows and doors (casement & awning and sliding stacker doors) No problem recommending them. Good luck Re: Double glaze in Sydney? The others didn't directly answer my questions about where there product was made, so I am guessing imported. So far Rylock is on the top of my list Re: Double glaze in Sydney? Window & door types? 6Jun 02, 2015 4:50 pm HopelessRomantic- I think it is great that they are locally made. They have direct responsibility for the workmanship. Angelique is very knowledgable and I found the staff I dealt with very helpful. Good luck with your build. I have been looking into getting quotes for a reno I am doing shortly. I have been looking at Trend and Wideline for both windows and doors. I did enquire with Vista but… 0 6161 I’m in a similar position except I’m after sliding 3 stacking doors. I am on a second-story apartment of which the balcony would not adequately fit any bi-fold or… 5 16150 Current door width is approx 2700, looking to have double doors fitted 820-820. What size does the frame need to be before door jamb? Thanks 0 3548 |
