Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 23, 2014 1:45 pm We have been living in a metricon built home for over two years. Upstairs windows are mostly restricted awning windows due to safety regulation - with a large fixed panel at the bottom and a very narrow restricted openable awning panel at the top. This has been proven to be a poor design. Summer is very hot upstairs. I am looking for solutions to improve the the ventilation. Ceiling high is 2.4m, ceiling fan is not practical. Things we have been considering: Change the awning windows to be casement or double hung windows, not sure which one will give the most ventilation when restricted. It is an expensive exercise, not sure if it is any better at the end. apply external solar window films to the windows - assume it is cheaper, but not sure if they are allowed on residential windows and how good they are. Would like to hear your experience with any of the above solutions. Thanks Re: solutions to improve poor ventilation upstairs 2Jan 23, 2014 3:55 pm If you have got east and west facing windows have internal reflective film installed. You will be amazed at the difference it can make and a lot cheaper than new windows. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Types of windows, given the same opening won't make a big difference as it is air flow from the pressure differentials (negative and positive) that moves the air. I agree with film, try that first. As well, think about evaporated air conditioning as a cheap solution, or inverter refrigerated.
