Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Dec 04, 2013 3:44 pm Hey People, I am in the process of finalizing a builder who is going to build a period style home for me in Melbourne's west. I am on a budget and hence trying to save every dollar i can so i can put it back into the house to get most of the period style features as opposed to some. I am planning on using reclaimed timber doors and windows in the house and need pointers on all the things that need to be considered as i have never done this before. a) Would longevity of the product be an issue? b) Would it be wrong to expect that it would be sold ONLY after being treated? c) What are some of the common issues one would face later on with the product? Thanks in advance! Vj Re: Reclaimed Timber Doors & Windows 2Dec 05, 2013 5:36 am The only problem I can see is, how do you get used product certified in a new home? Without a glazing certificate you won't get a certificate of occupancy. I think the only thing you can do is to buy new windows. I don't make timber windows, so I was not touting for your business, just giving general advice. I would not use my address as my member name (I assume that is your street address). Any mention of building stages on Homeone could draw the attention of the wrong people. Didn't have any issues with them at all and I'd actually say they are probably better quality than new doors and often with period hardware as well. One of the downsides though is that they come with a century's worth of paint so expect lead based paints etc but you can send them off to be stripped. We passed on the windows because they were way more expensive than new ones especially once you pay to have them stripped and have the ropes/weights replaced on double hung ones. If you're planning on doing this stuff yourself though there might be some savings. On the whole though, unless you happen to pass a demo and manage to find the right size doors and windows, don't expect that reclaimed stuff is going to be cheaper. I found the doors were reasonable and a must to maintain the heritage look and get a uniform look throughout - you can simply tell on sight a modern reproduction from the real deal. With windows though - apart from the modern hardware which make them easier to operate - they are pretty much identical to the original. Best of luck with it all. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Reclaimed Timber Doors & Windows 6Dec 06, 2013 7:13 am If you are in a 'designated bushfire prone area', in some circumstances, they may not meet requirements. Thanks for the concern on the profile name, I dont intend to post updates on the build or anything like that at all. Just hear to gain insights and hear stories good or bad.
