AUSTRALIAN BUILD CODES BOARD, NCC 2013 RULES:
EFFECTIVE FROM 1ST MAY 2013, ALL SLIDING WINDOWS ON THE UPPER FLOOR WILL BE FITTED WITH A DIAMOND GRILL BARRIER SCREEN. ALL AWNING WINDOWS WILL NOT BE FITTED WITH BARRIER SCREENS, INSTEAD THEY WILL BE RESTRICTED TO A 125MM (12CM) OPENING.
12cm... is barely enough too cool a room on a hot day. I asked the sales consultant if it could be "tweaked" and he told me the chain would probably only be made just so that it runs out after opening 12cm, although he was sorta unsure as well... Does anyone know if that's the truth?? How annoying is it that we are forced to add these lame safety laws in our OWN homes!, what if some people don't have kids?
This awning window demonstrates a 12cm opening (max)

All NSW/QLD homes now will be forced to add these ugly barrier screens to the first floor:

For window barriers, the changes will require all openable windows in early childhood centres and in habitable rooms in residential buildings, where the floor is more than 2m above the surface beneath, to be either fitted with a screen or have the window opening limited to 125mm. the current option of a window is sill height of at least 865mm will be removed.
The Children's Hospital at Westmead in NSW reported that from 1998 to 2011 there have been 113 young children admitted after falling from windows, mostly from a window in their own home, and a similar number from balconies. 80% of cases resulted in significant or severe injuries.
