Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 24, 2013 9:39 pm I haven't been able to find the answer to my query in other posts, so appoligize in advance if it has been discussed before. We have received a quote for double glazed windows with 6 mm Low E glass 12 mm Gap 6 mm Tinted. When I asked them which is the outside pane of glass. They said either it is up to us. Should the Low E glass be on the outside or the tinted glass? Any info would be great. Thanks Nelso Re: Double Glazed Windows Tinting question 2Jul 24, 2013 9:54 pm I think it depends on why you want the low e, to keep the warmth in in winter(then low e on inside pane) or if you want to keep the radiant heat from the direct sun out (then put low e on outside pane). Although I think the 2nd option is usually why you use low e Re: Double Glazed Windows Tinting question 3Jul 25, 2013 7:46 am JAC is correct, but it is a very complicated question when using a tint because as well as depending where you live, it depends on the colour of your tint. The Tint is Blue Star Grey not overly dark. Just enough to take out some of the glare. So I assume the Low E should be the outside pane and the Tinted Pane inside. Would this be correct? Nelso Yes, that would be best as the blue in the tint would absorb and reradiate the red part of the spectrum, so would heat up your room. But the low-E, being on the outside, would filter out 80% of radiant heat first. I assume the low-E is soft coat to the inside of the double glazed unit (not comfortplus), this would be best. Does this mean in winter the tint would help keep the warmth in? Cheers Nelso Welcome It's the low-E that will help in winter, Low-E works both ways, just in one direction it is slightly more effective. I think the comfort smart is their own version of comfort plus. Our builder said its a soft coat.We are wanting to put it east and west where we are not protected from the summer sun.The double glazing will be the whole house. Also what is the best parametres for the double glazing in regards to insulation.thks for your expert advice Re: Double Glazed Windows Tinting question 9Aug 30, 2013 6:31 pm Hi A&L uses the brand ComfortSmart (invented by yours truly) to represent their double glazed products. They use various low-E configurations, so you will need to get the specification for your windows... Check out the different configurations, then ask what you will get.

But it is effective in both directions, just not equally. To purely stop solar heat gain, ideally it needs to be on surface 2. Never on the outside.
