Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 21, 2006 9:29 pm Hi all, I am about to take delivery of two sets of western red ceder bi fold doors. They are to be supplied and fitted by the company I have purchased them from. The doors will come "raw" ie not stained. My question is how should i go about staining/sealing these doors? They will be opening onto a covered alfresco area, so need to be protected externaly. Should I stain the surrounds (upper and lower tracks) before they are installed because obviously I wont be able to get to the underside once installed. If timber is only stained/sealed on one side it usually pulls tight and cracks.
cheers Jimbo Re: Staining new bifold doors 2Sep 23, 2006 8:14 pm You definately should seal the doors prior to installation. The bottom side of a door is the most critical side when a door is exsposed to the elements.
I would recommend using an anti-fungal sealer first before finishing eg. Intergrain Dimension 4 (water-based) or Feast Watson Fungisheald ( oil based) After that there are any number of top coats you can use. The best water based IMO is Intergrain DWD if your after a satin natural type look, otherwise for a glossy type look try Bondall exterior varnishs'.(oil based) Re: Staining new bifold doors 3May 25, 2007 12:24 am You should certainly seal the doors, but do not forget, the carpenter will most likely need to trim the doors to fit them, so you may have to remove them once they are fitted to re=stain the edges...
