Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 14, 2013 7:45 pm Does anyone have a pull handle external door and can explain whether is it easy to lock yourself out? Eg you go out to check the mailbox, you close the door behind you because it is cold and you don't have a key on you. Because there is no handle to turn, does the door automatically lock behind you? How does it work? Thanks. Or even an omni with the same handle on the inside as out? I like the omni but I am thinking about putting a Corinthian Calypso merbau louvre on the front door and having the glass louvre one for my laundry door. I know from previous houses I have built where the clients have used this door, the louvres won't open fully in the middle section as it hits the handle (when using lever sets). The only other option I can see is to use a pull handle inside and out and have a roller catch mortice lock, but I don't really like removing the amount of timber you need to install the mortice lock! Especially when it is only really timber frame around a louvre gallery! Re: Pull handle external doors- easy to lock yourself out? 6Jun 07, 2013 9:39 pm My sister was complaining about her new door that has a pull-handle on the outside. If it's latched, it's locked from the outside. If it's not latched it won't stay closed. The other problems with this, apart from locking yourself out: When you're expecting guests or the kids home from school you can't leave it unlocked but closed; to garden in the front yard, etc you'd have to take your keys; as a guest, if you go to get something from your car, you either have to leave the door open (& hope no one shuts it) or knock and get them to let you in again. At my sister's this is exacerbated by her not having a screen door at all. Re: Pull handle external doors- easy to lock yourself out? 7Jun 08, 2013 1:57 pm kylie, I would find that annoying. We decided not to for a pull handle in the end, as with the deadlock it would have been close to $500 more than a normal handle! You never lock yourself out, it's impossible. You need to physically lock it with the key from outside, or you can lock it from inside with the key. I leave mine unlocked so that when people come home they just push the door open and walk in. You definitely don't need to pay all that money for the Omni trilock system. When you say they just push the door open - you mean without turning a handle or anything? How does the door unlatch? I'd like to get that, whatever it is. Re: Pull handle external doors- easy to lock yourself out? 10Jun 20, 2013 2:37 pm It's called a pull handle but coz its on the exterior of the door, you push the door. The door just opens. So imagine a normal internal door, when its shut that little quarter round metal piece sticks into the door frame but when u turn the knob or handle it pulls it in and u can freely push the door open. Well with my double entry doors, it's just the weight of the pushing of the door that makes the quarter round metal thing retract inside the door and away from the second door. The main door has the metal bit and the second door has the hole that accepts the protruding metal thing. So if there was a really crazy big wind, and the doors weren't solid, it would just blow open, coz the only thing holding it closed is that metal protruding thing holding it into the other door. Hope that isn't too cryptic of an explanation lol! All my visitors get so confused coz they try to turn the dummy handle and it doesn't even do anything hehe GOODLIFE - Bravo - BUTLER http://getmistyfied.blogspot.com.au Display 20/02/2012 PPA 01/04/12 Prestart: 25/07/12 Settlement: 31/07/2012 Contracts:August Slab 19/11/12 BRICKS 10/11/12 Roof 16/01/13 Re: Pull handle external doors- easy to lock yourself out? 13Jun 20, 2013 5:11 pm We have long pull handles as well as a touch pad lock for the whole locking yourself out reason - this way the kids can't accidentally lock us out - anyone who has the code can enter the house (handy for family and friends too). Hi kyton, what touch pad have you got? What happens on inside to lock it? Black on light wood does look good.
