Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 06, 2013 7:04 am Hi there, first time poster, long time listener. bought in Sydney recently and have just agreed with Stegbar to replace all of the windows and external doors plus add some bifolds along with stackable doors to open the place up a little. All western red cedar, to be stained. It's a 3 bedroom bungalow, so there would be a lot of wood to give 3 coats of sikkens to, but I can't believe how much the original staining quote came back at. Quote was for 25% of the cost of the windows themselves. I am definitely in the wrong game. Is staining traditionally a very expensive task? Re: Cost of staining windows and doors 3Mar 19, 2013 6:44 pm Hi DSRacer, My husband and I are in the process of staining and varnishing all our windows and doors and I can certainly understand that it would cost to have it done professionally. It is extremely labour intensive and time consuming. All the masking, sanding, priming, applying three coats of varnish and waiting for coats to dry means that each window and door takes us about 4 days to do properly and ours are already up so there is extra time involved taking them down and putting them back up again. It is back-breaking. Then we have the weather to contend with. It's either too hot, too windy or too wet. At least if yours are done before they are put up you won't have the last two problems. You will just have to maintain the varnish every 12 months or so. Re: Cost of staining windows and doors 4Mar 20, 2013 10:31 am Ditto to what Liliana said......I oiled a house full of cedar windows and doors and it took me 4 months.....very loooong months! I didn't end up using Sikkens, just went with a waterbased decking oil that I had the bright idea of adding a stain to so that the end product would be slightly darker - the stain made things even harder because of brushmarks, so extra care had to be taken. I did 3 coats and the windows have been in for about 18 months and there is no sign of weathering yet. It was hard work but looking at them now I just love them....worth all the effort IMO. Liliana - I didn't tape the windows up......I was quite careful when brushing the oil on but any that got onto the glass I was able to scrape off easily enough with one of those razor scrapers....give it a try, might save you some time Owner Building on 1800sqm Sanity Intact so far Locked up March 2012 Re: Cost of staining windows and doors 5Mar 20, 2013 12:09 pm Hi lynny-jane, Yes I remember you giving us some advice about nine months ago. Out of ignorance we had KDHW doors and windows put up unprimed and by the time we were in a position to protect them it was already winter and the wood was starting to go mouldy. My husband cleaned them all with Dexprep which worked really well and then had to slosh a primer stain on them just to hold them until we could get to them in warmer weather. He didn't mask then so I have already had my fill of cleaning stain off glass with a scraper! Definitely doing them before they go up is the way to go - it is easier to control the brush for a start. A lot of the masking now is to protect the weatherboards which we spent Christmas painting. So what we are doing now is having to sand down the old primer and start again properly. It is definitely worth the effort as they do look fantastic but I reckon we need a tee-shirt which says "we stained our windows and doors and survived"! We were going to have a deck but after realising how much you have to "baby" wood in our climate we have decided to go with flagstones. Re: Cost of staining windows and doors 6Mar 21, 2013 12:07 pm Of course......my memory LOL.....Great idea for a Tshirt hehe, like a private little joke between "oilers" DSRacer......just another thing I thought of, we got a cedar garage door - price raw was roughly $5000 (installed) but if we wanted it stained or oiled or sealed the cost was an extra $1000....so roughly 20% on top.
