Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 28, 2013 5:56 pm We're looking to build up in Sydney's Inner West. The house has quite nice views to the W (or NW), which is the back of the house. My current thinking is to place a small window on the rear (W facing) wall of the new upstairs section, and a larger window on the N side. The back yard has a number of large trees, and so the rear of the house gets reasonable protection from the afternoon sun. Is there a particular type of window or glass I should be looking to use for these windows to help reduce the impact of the afternoon sun in summer? Is there anything else I should keep in mind? Re: West facing windows 2Feb 28, 2013 7:43 pm I am told low E double glazing works but I have found a reflective film works really well. Re: West facing windows 3Mar 01, 2013 10:21 pm Hi we are in the same situation as you with views to the back facing north west/ west. In the end becuase we wanted benefit from the views - we have upstairs living with alfresco leading out so we have large stackers/bifolds. At the moment if you can afford it I think doubleglazing with a low-e coating is the optimal solution - but for cost reasons I am probably going to stick with single glazing in smartglass/ with tinting on all the westerly/ north west windows & doors. Other options are in your design, try and have some eaves/ shade screening louvres that hangs above or outside of the windows to offer some shade. Re: West facing windows 4Mar 02, 2013 11:18 am As p2f says. Nothing beats shade to stop heat entering through windows. Awnings, wide eaves, deciduous trees, pergolas anything that lets the winter sun in and keeps the summer sun out is a winner. You will have to consider some of these options when you or the designer applies for the BASIX certificate pre DA.
