Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 21, 2013 11:01 pm Hi All, I wondering if anybody has experience with Rehau's UPVC profiles. I am looking to solve an issue with mainly high wind speeds and keeping out cold drafts. At some times of the year we have sustain wind speeds of over 100Km/h and this year had speeds hitting 180km/h. The average over night temperature during the winter months is below zero while the day temp stays in single figures. We will more than likely be using Viridian ThermoTech glass 6/12/6 argon filled. The cost has me shaking and thought it worth asking before I committed any money. Any pro's or con's would be appreciated. Cheers Ben A. If you are looking at large windows and large sashes (>2m), then IMO, think again, as the thermal expansion of PVC is 5 times the steel reinforcement and you may have problems with sashes binding and jambs bowing. Australian temperatures vary by 40 degrees normally and up to 50 degrees at extremes, this will expand PVC by 6mm over 2m. I've taken a look and it looks like the widest we have is around 1050mm, so counting all should be ok. He is quoting 6-16-6 Clear Low E 16mm Silver Spacer Argon Gas Filled windows which seem a bit over the top to me at the moment. Everything I have read says a 12mm spacer is about the optimal point. The only thing I can think is noise reduction, and our closest road is over 2.5km away so that could be a waste of money. Cheers Ben The spacers and air gap are cheap... you will find that the glazing rebate for the profile used is 6+16+6 = 28mm, and that is likely why there is a 16mm air gap and 6mm glass. They may have a deeper glazing bead, if you ask, and that would narrow the rebate. Low-E adds cost which you don't really need as its main purpose is to reduce solar heat gain. 4/12/4 or 5/10/5 clear float, would reduce your window cost by about $80-$100/m2. The house is a homestead style, so I have quite large verandas on the sunny sides of the house. The Low e glass is just overkill. Hi, Can I ask which company you are looking at for your Windows. The reason Is, I am curently looking at Double glazing, my house design is also a homestead with 2.2m verandah all the way around. I am undecided on whether to go UPVC (which I always had in the UK years ago) or Alli. MY biggest Windows are 1800 x 1800. Col. Re: Experience with Rehau profiles 7Apr 21, 2013 8:55 pm Hi DefenderOwner, In sydney I spoke to Plustec and in Canberra I spoke to 2020 Windows. Stick the usual .com.au on the end of each and you will get their websites. Steve from 2020 was very approachable and seemed a lot more keen to do business than Plustec and he is closer to me. We have an exposed building site which has the winds directly off the Snowy Ski fields ( it is the view out of the front windows which are North facing and the Western Side of the house ), so driving wind and water was a primary issue to address. We originally had 1800x1800 windows, but as the builder pointed out to me it is a LOT of extra money in the bottom 500mm of the window just to look at grass. We have changed the size to 1800x1330 and are using the windows as "picture frames" to pick up the different views around the house ( Bush, Rural, Lake, Mountains, Snowline ). I have also been told that there is a rough ratio you need to follow for tilt and turn windows, so our sizes were dictated by that. At $700-900 a square metre every bit counts to control costs. We reduced the glass to 31m2. We only have verandahs on two sides. I removed them from the back of the house as we look back into a hill facing South, so sun would never be an issue. On the Western side of the house we only have 1 window so the Bride can sit in the bath and look down the range into Victoria. As Ed said, the sash size is something you really need to keep in the back of your mind Hope this helps.
