Thinking about using these in the kids' rooms. We have one in our bedroom above our bed. I think they're great for privacy upstairs on a two story home, you can leave the blinds open, or not have any, and nobody can see in. Our block is tiny so we'll be close to the neighbours. But... I don't know if they would make a room look dark? What do you think? Re: What do you think of these high windows? 2Apr 16, 2008 8:49 pm I think they look good, we are getting them in our kids room as they are standard on the house we are building with PD..
I'm just thinking what window dressings to use for them..... Re: What do you think of these high windows? 3Apr 16, 2008 8:52 pm If your block is small, and will be looking at your neighbours, I say they are a great idea.
I think you will still need window dressings as you dont want the light to wake the chickens up too early (if they dont already get up at the crack of dawn ) Paula Re: What do you think of these high windows? 4Apr 16, 2008 8:53 pm When of the things we like about our new place is that the kid's rooms have higher sills. Means you can put the bed under the window or extra storage. In my opinion very practical in a kids room. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: What do you think of these high windows? 5Apr 16, 2008 9:16 pm Do they not have the disadvantage though that you can't see out??
(at least not without standing on tippy toe??) Maybe not, depending on the view outside?? And maybe not a kids issue, I know this would bother me in my own room though. I can understand them as a second window, say in a long narrow room, where there is also a large window that you can see out of. Re privacy and people not seeing in: if you have sheer curtains they stop people seeing in during the day, and then just pull the blind down/across at night. Re: What do you think of these high windows? 6Apr 16, 2008 9:33 pm We're having similar sorts of windows in our kids' bedrooms, but I think a bit higher. That picture has relieved me some what, as I was thinking that their rooms may be a bit dark, but it looks good in that photo.
We're having them to avoid having windows on the cold south side of our house and so the designer decided to raise the roof in the hallway and put these windows in. We also don't know what window dressings to put in, but at this stage are thinking nothing and then if after living in the house we decide we need something, we'll think about it then. 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: What do you think of these high windows? 8Apr 16, 2008 9:42 pm Thanks guys, I think I'm going to go with them!
Helyn I guess the idea is that if there's nothing good to look at (eg neighbours' windows) then you'd rather look at the blue sky! On one side of each room would be another two story house, the back view wouldn't be too bad, it overlooks a big patch of trees that our block backs onto, but the alfresco and meals room is at the back, so if they looked out that window and down they'd mainly see a big ugly roof. As for window coverings, mm yeah I think I'll also wait until we get in there and see. Yes Paula they are up at the crack of dawn at the moment, stupid dailight savings, I mean 5, 5.30 if I'm lucky. But hopefully that will change one day *yawn* Belinda I really like the white roller blinds, we'll probably end up with those on most of our windows and I htink they'd look great on these ones too. The other thing I really like is that I think they'd be safer for little ones. Hard to fall out of. The other thing you may want to think about is the cost of furnishing a window like this. You wont be able to go and get a standard with/standard drop from target or spotlight It would definatley be a custom made blind/drape/pelmet jobbie. There is something to be said for standard sizes and the cost of curtains... I need to go and have a beer and growl out the back for 10 minutes! I am a MAN damnit! I think you made up for it by calling it a "pelmet jobbie" very manly....hey I posted poetry never thought I'd do that but it was a good topic... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: What do you think of these high windows? 12Apr 17, 2008 10:22 am Thanks chelle, I hope so, I'm so tired!
LOL Matt, not a fan of pelmet jobbies myself, but yeah I agree, furnishing it will be more expensive. We've actually decided to make them 900 high instead of 600 and just moving them up a bit more so they're still highish but they let in a bit more light since they're rooms are on the south east and south west of the house. Good point if you have small kids and upstairs bedrooms, never thought of that, not haveing either myself. Re: What do you think of these high windows? 14Apr 17, 2008 10:56 am Just checked the drawings of the new house....1200 mm high windows in the kid's bedrooms....still seems to give a bit of wall space....hopefully not that low that they'll jump out of.....although if they want to go I'm not stopping them.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: What do you think of these high windows? 16Apr 18, 2008 9:30 pm Helyn Good point if you have small kids and upstairs bedrooms, never thought of that, not haveing either myself. Might also stop some not-so-little kids sneaking out the window after everyone else is in bed..... Re: What do you think of these high windows? 17May 15, 2008 10:29 am Horrendous.
I was almost forced to put those windows due to some silly council privacy law, that did not allow me to place normal windows. Instead I placed a large normal window with fog glass. Once the inspection was done, we replaced it with normal glass. Funnily enough, our neighbour is not offended that we can see their garage wall. Small pokey things do nothing for a home but collect dust. Always go big with features such as windows, or if you can't, just leave a wall.
