Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 02, 2013 10:13 pm Today my partner attended a seminar in Perth about "Greening up your house". Amongst other things she was told that the Double Glazing we buy and use here, because it is of European design isn't suited to Australian conditions but wasn't exactly forthcoming with any backup data to support that statement. After a quick search I cant find any information that supports that claim. Is anyone here any the wiser? I am interested to find out more about this because I have lived in the middle of Europe (Czech Republic) when the temps have been -20C and +35C. Cheers Denis Re: Value of double glazing 2Feb 03, 2013 5:09 am As long as you get it with Low E Glass to minimize the heat from direct sunlight as this is the main disadvantage in hotter areas. Double Glazing is more efficient with ambient temperatures hence works better in colder climates. Having said that I'm having my home fully set up with upvc double glazed windows and sliding doors. The frame that comes with UPVC double glazed is a lot more secure than standard windows so its also added extra security as well which I find people don't seem to mention. Total cost for the upgrade to a 24 sq home cost me about $17,000. It is cheaper to use aluminium thermally broken frames but we also wanted better security on the windows. Don't forget the added value of sound insillation as well. Re: Value of double glazing 3Feb 03, 2013 10:51 pm DenisPC9 Today my partner attended a seminar in Perth about "Greening up your house". Cheers Denis It's rubbish Denis... completely untrue (tell them I said so!!! ). Sounds like "Greening up your house..." is using a pot of green paint... But, European windows which are NOT tested to Australian standards don't comply. Try getting your carpenters to carry large double-glazed windows up to the second level on a double-storey house! Accept double-glazing may be better but all in all? Fully agree re the sound insulation. If in a noisy area? Go to double glazing. Re: Value of double glazing 5Feb 05, 2013 6:59 am leighton I reckon low e glass is the way to go. Our double glazing would be on par cost wise and low-E does not do what double glazing does, it is useless when it comes to controlling the biggest energy thief, conducted heat. Further, low-e has lots of problems in single glazing... search the forum to find other users problems. I advise against low-E in single glazing, and 100% against any idea it works like double glazing... Weight wise, low-E would be 5kgs lighter per square metre... not a lot.
