Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 23, 2013 11:59 am I have a huge dilemma.im getting my double hung sash windows remade and the suppliers who are making our bedroom window have given us 2 options.double glazed 4mm 6mm gas gap then another 4mm.tge second option was for 10.38 comfort glass.the cost dufference is minimal and not an issue.the glass supplier is telling me the laminated glass is far better for noise than the double glazing and the comfort glass has the added benefit of helping keep it cooler in summer and warmer in winter.our biggest issue is noise but we do also want the thermal aspects too.am I right in thinking the laminated glass is not as good as double glazing and they are bluffing me by telling me it is better.are there issues with comfort glass damaging etc.i really want to make the right decision.we can't really go any thicker with double glazing due to the style of windows.any advice or help is greatly appreciated or even where I can look up stuff on this ive tried googling it but no luck Re: Double glazing vs 10.38comfort glass please help 2Jan 24, 2013 10:15 am Hi Parkesy55, I think they must be bluffing, double glazing is much better noise insulation that laminated. The only time laminated glass is better is when it is laminated double glazing, and that is amazing noise insulation. Maybe ask them to quote that =) Also, an argon gas filled gap seems to me to be unnecessary. it costs extra and has very minimal effect unless it is combined with low-e glass. Maybe ask for a larger gap but with dry air instead of gas? Since you haven't been able to find anything on the internet, I would recommend calling a couple double glazing suppliers and just asking and maybe getting a quote from them. Most of them will have someone who will be able to provide some answers =) Re: Double glazing vs 10.38comfort glass please help 3Jan 24, 2013 11:21 am The ComfortPlus option, by virtue of there being more glass (10mm vs. 8mm), will give you a slightly improved acoustic performance compared to the double glazing offered. ComfortPlus is laminated, but laminate makes a very small difference in noise control that does not warrant the cost IMO. ComfortPlus has other problems which would make me choose the double glazed option, it is difficult to clean, and marks easily, it can also spontaneously fracture (safely ) due to thermal stress. In terms of thermal performance, ComfortPlus cannot be compared to double glazing, they work differently. Heat escaping through conduction (the massive majority of heat loss through windows) will be reduced by double glazing but ComfortPlus will have no effect. Heat coming into the home through sunlight will be reduced by ComfortPlus, but double glazing will have a negligible effect. Your double glazed option is not the best, being more than 30% less efficient than the best aluminium window (I won't name it here, as it may be considered boasting ).
