Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 02, 2013 6:27 am Hi, We have our children in two eastern bedrooms in our newly built house. This is our first summer in the new house and I am finding that in the mornings, with the doors closed overnight, both these rooms are like saunas in the morning. Quite unbearable. I have a sunscreen holland blind and blockout roman blinds on the windows but the windows are very large in both rooms and the blinds all feel very hot in the morning to touch. We have ceiling fans but they do not seem to make a lot of difference. I am just wondering what is the most affordable option to curb the heat - a blockout canvas blind outside or double glazing the two windows. We also do not have any eaves in the house. I am thinking we should have not gone with the builder's plans of very large windows in those rooms? Thanks in advance, any advice appreciated. Heytherek Re: Eastern bedrooms heating up too much in mornings 2Jan 02, 2013 7:07 am We have double glazing and the one room that gets the early sun, ( and has a 600 mm eave) gets hot. Even with double glazing ( although the inside blind is a cheap spotlight one) I would go for an outside awning. You don't want sun to ' touch the window' that's the goal. Once the suns on the window....hello...oven! Shade the window on the outside, then if needed double glaze with low-E glass to stop 80% of the solar heat gain. Double glazing on its own has no effect on solar heat gain, low-E glass is the trick, but it's only useful in double glazing, don't be persuaded otherwise. Guess our best bet is to get something on the outside of the window. We have a canvas bloc kout blind on our north facing window so guess for uniformity it might be best to stick to one of those, but I like the idea of those outside blinds in the link Re: Eastern bedrooms heating up too much in mornings 7Jan 02, 2013 10:29 am Highly reflective window film is the answer I prefer for existing windows. Re: Eastern bedrooms heating up too much in mornings 8Jan 02, 2013 3:33 pm We put a shade cloth blind on the outside of my daughter's east facing bedroom a couple of weeks ago because her room was heating up. Perth has just had a week of high temps and the outdoor blind has made a huge difference to the temp in her room. Re: Eastern bedrooms heating up too much in mornings 10Jan 03, 2013 6:38 pm Just the ordinary shade cloth (with small holes) but it seems to do the trick. Re: Eastern bedrooms heating up too much in mornings 11Jan 03, 2013 7:16 pm We have a shade cloth blind on the outside of my step son's east facing bedroom window and its made a huge difference. It's down every summer and rolled up again every winter. This house our master room is north facing (totally didn't build to solar aspect). We ended up tinting window due to heat and its made a big difference Re: Eastern bedrooms heating up too much in mornings 13Jan 03, 2013 8:42 pm As already mentioned above the external blind will be your best bet-rolled up it still allows the sun in during the winter months when you will appreciate the extra heat, but cuts it down in the summer when you block the sun from hitting the glass and heating it up. Then you'll have summer cooling shade for free, and lovely winter sun.... Fantastic idea. That's what we have done with our current west facing bedroom windows. Very true. Our tree was planted in 2006 and it has given us shade now for maybe the last three years. Perhaps put a temporary outdoor blind AND plant a deciduous tree When the tree has grown enough to shade the window then remove the blind. It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it.
