Browse Forums Windows & Doors Re: What window for a double storey house 2Dec 23, 2012 6:40 am Reno_girl I am changing my full length window in my childs bedroom to a normal window size, ie bricking/plastering the bottom half because it gives her more wall space for furniture and also prevents the west sun from coming into her room. I am guessing that her room once had the smaller height window because the awning outside only comes half way down and the previous owners changed it to full length. The query is because it is double storey and for safety what window would you use ie awning, double hung or sliding. Currently this full length window is an awning type window and as we have evaporative cooling I have found that the hot air does not escape quick enough. What would you all recommend? Thanks for any advice Changes in legislation shortly will mean all windows must have restricted openings for first floor, and when combined with the ventilation rules, sliding and double hung will have difficulty complying (they are only 50% openable to start with). Casement or awning is the way to go. If it is a wide window with a mullion, then have 2 sashes. Evaporative cooling is pressured so awning or casement should be fine, perhaps your flow needs balancing between areas. To reduce the solar heating, use double glazing WITH low-E.
