Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Dec 07, 2012 4:14 pm Hi All, We were about to order our windows for the extension and then I saw how ugly the double glazed sliding windows are. We are thinking about going back to single glazing for the bathroom and toilet which are on the east side of the house. Is there any benefit in leaving them as double glazed? Re: Double Glazing in Bathroom and Toilet 3Dec 08, 2012 9:05 am Thanks JazzyJess, I've looked at a few manufacturers and they all seem to have some problem or another with their sliding windows. These are aluminium sliding windows and most of the windows still seem to use the same section (frame) as they do with single glazed which only accepts around 6mm of glass. So to fit in the 20mm of double glazing they need to fit an adapter which means the frames are thicker and wider and as a result you get an almost frame within a frame effect where the glass protrudes because of the spacer. It is not as noticable on the larger windows, but on the bathroom and particularly toilet window which are quite small the extra chunkiness and the protruding is quite noticeable. Because aluminium is evil in windows and the double glazing makes a bigger aluminium frame on the windows the proportion of aluminium to glass is greater on these smaller windows so I was wondering whether that would negate the benefit of double glazing on the smaller windows. Also since they are facing east I wasn't sure whether you get the same benefit from double glazing. I found some Dowell windows which look quite slimline but their double glazing is only 4-8-4 or 3-10-3 and the whole window seems quite a bit less solid than the other windows I've been looking at. Re: Double Glazing in Bathroom and Toilet 4Dec 08, 2012 10:32 am Officially you will lose around 2-3 watts per sq.m. per degree Celsius if you don't double glaze. But sliders leak air, so are not the best for energy anyway. If you remember to keep you bathroom and toilet doors closed (and you don't heat these), then you could leave these single glazed... If it wasn't for the wife-mandated sliding windows I would have come to you about getting our windows. By the way, I saw some of your windows and doors for the first time today in a display home in Craigieburn. They look like solid quality units.
