Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Dec 04, 2012 8:49 am Hi, I'm about to order my windows and the sales rep has told me that their low-e glass is available for the same price as their normal clear glass at the moment. This is for double glazed aluminum windows. Is there any disadvantage in choosing the low-e glass over the clear glass? The sales rep mentioned that low e glass may have a slight green tint, is that correct? Re: Low-E glass query 2Dec 04, 2012 9:11 am Our low-E glass doesn't have a green tint at all. I can't see any difference with the other double-glazing. Unless they just told us it would be low-E and it isn't! I think low-E works best for west-facing windows because it reduces heat transference in summer. My son's room has quite large windows facing west (the only room in the house that faces west) and I find that there is a marked difference in heat transference compared to our old house that had all the living areas facing west and only single-paned standard glass. Re: Low-E glass query 4Dec 04, 2012 11:34 am I agree with everything that Liliana has said, I don't see why low-E would be a green tint, but it is slightly darker. You can of course get a green tint low-E. We have a mirror finish in low-E too... Ask to see a sample. There is a fair few types low-e and they all have different ratings and reflective surfaces . The west facing windows unsurprisingly pass too much heat in summer. I initially thought of getting retro-fit double glazing and I am getting a quote next week from http://www.winsulation.com BUT when I started looking into this I am now thinking it may be better to just replace the glass with thicker low-e? Thoughts? What is the most cost effective way to significantly reduce the heat gain from direct light through those windows (after they are in!). We don't want a reflective look from the outside nor a tinted (edit: slightly darker ok as per previous post) look from the inside. Try low-E, but you will have the cleaning problem, and it may fracture. Check out the individual manufacturers databases they are online, all glass is registered in a global database (I don't have access where I am today).
