Hard coating Low-e shouldn't be used on the face 2 of double glazed units, except for a fridge or cellar door. Low-e only prevents hear from going out not from coming in. Re: double glazing both sheets of glass low e 3Oct 16, 2012 2:31 pm Pulpo Has anyone heard of double glazing with both sheets of glass low-e? Its been specified in some plans? I'm guessing they want no heat gain through the glass? Any thoughts? Pulpo The principle is that low-E glass is a one way solution... if you number the glass surfaces from the outside, 1, 2, 3, 4, then in a heating climate we place the active surface of Low-E on surface 3, where it keeps the heat inside the home and in a cooling climate on surface 2 where it keeps the heat outside the home. In my opinion, there is a small difference in U value for low-E between heat entering and leaving, wherever the low-E is placed, and in Europe low-E has 2 U-values for that purpose. But if we suppose that low-E stops 80% of the radiant heat, then adding an extra pane will only work on the 20% remaining radiant heat, so I think that would not be very economical. It may be that the energy rater is simply trying everything to get the rating across the line... It really didn't have anything to do with me and he was in little mood to chat. Cheers Pulpo This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
