Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 30, 2012 12:26 pm Hi there I live on a busy one lane each way st which is a main st. that has occasional bus and truck use. Traffic noise is something I wish to cut down. Its a single story place ad the room i'm interested in reducing the noice is the living room which is at the front of the house. Theirs 3.5 r insulation in the ceiling and its a single brick house. Living room is about 10 metres to the street. How much of a difference do you think getting my living room window replaced which is 2m by 2.7 m standard 3,4 ml to a double glazed window which has laminated 6.38 glass then a 18 ml gap and then 4 ml 2nd glaze in upvc ? I'm wondering if anybody else has gone down this path and had a significant improvement or wether it will be a waste of time as the improvement may only be minimal. Any opinions are welcome Re: Cuttng out sound entering through the window 2Aug 30, 2012 1:06 pm Have you thought about fitting another layer (making it double glazing) to the existing windows via a system like: http://www.magnetite.com.au/Fits-Existing-Window.aspx Not used it myself but have seen it on renovation shows with good results. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Cuttng out sound entering through the window 3Aug 30, 2012 4:51 pm megaa Hi there I live on a busy one lane each way st which is a main st. that has occasional bus and truck use. Any opinions are welcome Our window (aluminium 8.76/9/5) is Rw 39... a good set of earmuffs hearing protection is around Rw 28. So our window has 39 dB sound stopping which is power way better than hearing protection. We have a sound box to demonstrate our standard glazing (Rw 34.5). But that assumes the sound leakage is in the window, not the ceiling and not the walls. Why not cover your window in a doona or two and see if it makes a difference, would need to be snug fit. It won't be as good as the window being replaced but it will be a good guide as to the effect. Tel. 1800 326 326 Re: Cuttng out sound entering through the window 6Aug 31, 2012 7:52 pm Just so you know I have Eco classic windows with the RW39. In most cases they do block a lot of noise coming through the windows, it kind of sounds like things are coming from a distance. EDIT: I just looked at my quote and I have 4mm toughened glass/9mm gap/8.38mm laminated glass argon filled unit so it may differ from the product Ed supplies now. However please tell us the noise you are trying to block. I live near a airport with small 'buzzing' planes that really vibrate the air and the sound comes straight through. I have been told that I need yet another lot of glazing on the inside to give a large air gap with either a thick single glazed sheet or another double glazed unit. So now I am looking for a casement window, preferably with a magnetic seal so that I don't need a locking handle ( no biggie ) that can open into the room ( I have awning windows that wind out externally at the moment ) it need's to have a thin (?) profile and built in such a way that I can fix it to the existing reveal and then reattach new architraves that will need to packed out around the window. Ed if you have what I'm after let me know. <y next house will have double glazed units on the outside a 130-150mm gap and a single glazed 12mm plus window on the inside. I would have loved to know all of this before putting the windows in. Also watch your sizes. I have a set of four awning windows at the front of the house laid horizontally on top of each other each window being approx 600mm high by 2200wide. With the window in this size I am left with the two bottom corners of each window not pulling up tight enough and having a small gap, which lets in noise. I am yet to find a way to fix this. This is really the only fault that I can find with the Eco Classic windows. Most of all do not get sliding windows as the brush seal is no good for blocking noise at all. Any other questions let me know. I assume our windows have the sash locks as well as the chainwinder??? We can always fit extra sash locks to pull it even tighter at the ends. Our awning has the lowest air infiltration of any window in WERS, but maybe your wider ones need tweeking. Height is 2m, Width is 2.1 open fixed open confiuguration or if fixed fixed open will ciut down noise further then thats preferable. Colour / preferably cream or white Type of windows - whatever best cuts down on noise i.e if awenings work better on noise reduction then go with that or vice versa. Brick veneer house single story. Thank you for your help Ed Aza you aske dthe type of noise tryying to be cut out - its traffic noise, Trucks, busses, general traffic on a single lane each way street. Is it possible to have a larger air gap between the two without compromising on the glass size ? i.e. 8.76 lets say 18 and 4 ml glass? Could I please trouble you for a quote also on 2.7 metre width and 2 m height ? Thanking you in advance. Re: Cuttng out sound entering through the window 15Sep 05, 2012 7:48 pm megaa Hi Ed. Can you email me your request and I will have someone get your quote back to you (ed @ ecoclassic .com .au). If this is the same window, I assume the wall will need to be removed to give you a 2700 height? Windows are designed for a particular glazing space, and ours is 20-22mm, to give the optimum 12mm airgap for energy efficiency, so I can't give you 18mm airgap, but I can tell you that the airgap will make no difference acoustically, until you get to over 100mm, and even then, the glass thickness is the governing factor. Tel. 1800 326 326 Re: Cuttng out sound entering through the window 16Mar 28, 2013 5:22 am Wow time has passed quick and I have put this in the too hard basket until now. It is a different window and its dimensions are 2 by 2.7 width. It needs to be a slider or if significantly cheaper can be a window which does not open at all as theirs roller shutters on the other side of the window so it can't open outwards. I'm pretty sure you can double glaze a sliding window ? How good is using a single glaze of thick glass lets say 12 or 10 ml ? Re: Cuttng out sound entering through the window 17Mar 28, 2013 7:11 pm Have a look here... Wish I had some more money. http://www.vantagealuminium.com.au/soun ... /sound.htm Re: Cuttng out sound entering through the window 18Mar 29, 2013 7:12 am aza0 Have a look here... Wish I had some more money. http://www.vantagealuminium.com.au/soun ... /sound.htm Remembering that 10dB is a discernible difference to our ears, our standard windows achieve Rw34.5 and we can supply up to Rw 39. Rw is the sound stopping power in dB. So you may not need more money. Plus, thicker glazing is heavy and is less thermally efficient as it leaves less room for an air gap. At that size, use a sliding door (but the height will make it expensive), or if it is economy you want, go for the fixed window with a mullion, making 2 lights or panes. Thicker glass makes almost no difference to thermal efficiency, only to sound stopping power.
