Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 22, 2012 4:48 pm Hi all, Hope this is the right section for this query. Recently had some glass ballustrade put in and noticed that silicone sealing is only done on one side of the glass. Apparently they use something called glazier's tape on the other side, not sure what that is. It is definitely harder to glaze the other side as it will mean climbing up a ladder to get access. I am just wondering if this is acceptable as the glass panels are really heavy (10mm thick, 1.7 high in some sections) and the last thing I want is for them to pop off and cause injury/damage. I rang the Australian Glazier's association, but they were not that helpful and informed me that there was no standards for this kind of thing. I also wrote the company an email asking whether it is normal to just silicone up one side of the panel and this was their response. The standard practice is to use glazing tape on the outside and silicone on the inside, (particularly when access is either difficult or dangerous) This is as much cosmetic as it is structural, and secures the glass adequately. I have not experienced a panel of glass “Popping Out”. However our warranty would cover such an event occurring. My main concern is not the warranty of the product, but just the safety aspect.
