Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 03, 2012 8:20 am Hi all, Long time lurker first time poster. I was hoping to get some opinions and advice around window options for the three of the windows in our future house. I'm not sure what they are normally referred to but the architect has labelled them as 'highlight' windows on the plans. They are somewhere between 3.5 - 5 metres off the ground to let in natural light from the entry hallway corridor and in our open plan lounge / kitchen. The hallway window is 600mm high by 2.1 metres wide (0621) and the two in the lounge/kitchen are 600mm high by 1.8 metres wide (0618). I'm not sure whether to stick with awning style windows or change them to fixed. Initially I was going to get awning with automation so they can be opened by remote/switch (as otherwise would need a ladder to open/close them). Now I'm just wondering if it is worth going to the extra trouble/cost in running extra power/motors there. It may also be a nicer effect with fixed windows as I don't think you need that vertical support bar in the middle of the window (mullion?) for the sizes we are looking at so it would just be one big pane of glass. I haven't confirmed but I think fixed might be a bit cheaper than an opening window as well. If we got opening windows I don't know if these would contribute a great deal to ventilation but I guess could maybe help with heat escape in summer. Interested to see anyone else's thoughts on this! Thanks Re: Fixed or Awning Windows 2Aug 03, 2012 4:03 pm Hi You can get a window winder that takes a mechanical handle to open and close, it is much cheaper. But I would certainly have opening windows, those high areas can get very hot, and with these windows, you have the natural convection to suck air through. Some windows can be made wider without the mullion. We make an opening awning 2650 wide, so just ask what can be done. Silly question but how do the window winders work (I think we might have had them at school!)? The one I'm picturing is a winder mounted on a wall that opens the window above it. I just can't remember how the winding action converted into the window actually opening. Are all the chains/levers or whatever hidden in the wall cavity for it to work or is it some other system (a long stick/broom with a special connection that you grab out and plug into the winder when you need to open/close the windows ). It's an independent long handle with a hook on the end. The chainwinder has a loop instead of a knob. Very effective. This all makes a lot of sense.
