Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 20, 2012 2:04 pm Hi, We are replacing some old (and very unsafe) large windows on our second story. The windows are north-west facing so get a lot of sun. None of the window companies quoting have suggested any sort of tinting or thermal protection. Just 4-6mm glass depending on the company. What would you recommend? The rooms heat up beautifully in winter and it wasn't terribly hot last summer but we are in Sydney so didn't really get many hot days last year. thanks in advance Re: Question about north facing windows 2Jul 20, 2012 3:39 pm If you have got decent eaves above the window you might not need any tinting. Re: Question about north facing windows 4Jul 20, 2012 11:36 pm If your room is comfortable as it is then I would just use clear glass, but if it gets unbearably hot when the sun comes through the glass, I would be using double glazing incorporating low-E. Don't use low-E without double glazing, it may fracture and it will be difficult to clean. At the moment, the room may not be too hot, but in the future with the sun beating down on the window, you may kick yourself for not putting in low E or double glazed windows. Double glazed windows will make no difference to solar heat gain, only shading and low-E will help. But then low-E only works in a double glazed unit. But double glazing on its own is useless for controlling solar heat gain. Just don't use low-E on its own!!! I hope this makes sense.
