Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 17, 2012 12:09 pm Hi There We are building a new home and we have selected a Hume "Savoy" XS 1200mm timber front door. We have just completed our colours and selected for the door to be stained. However DH wants a security flyscreen door to go in front. I like them too to get good airflow into the house, however I am thinking an aluminium coloured security screen door won't not look great in front of the timber door. Can you get timber framed security screens? I prefer a screen with no metal bars across the front, just stainless steel mesh. Or should I change the front door from stained to painted, so I can get a security door that matches the painted colour of the door? If you can get timber security doors and you have one, could you please let me know how you have found the quality? Any suggestions for suppliers in Sydney? Thanks We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! Re: Security screen for a 1200mm timber front door 3Mar 17, 2012 1:40 pm Have you considered a retractable screen? They work like a roller blind but retract to the side. All you see is the surround when it is open. I can't help with suppliers but google might help!! I believe they are pretty $$$ but might be something to investigate. I agree that it is nice to be able to open a front door for good ventilation but it seems a shame to hide a beautiful and possibly expensive front door. Good luck finding a solutions. Yes, you are spot on there. Have googled this subject but not much comes up for Sydney, plus I am hoping someone on H1 can provide direct feedback/ contacts. Nothing better than word of mouth recommendations!! We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! We got a 1.2m wide punched aluminium screen, custom made. . . cost us just under $1000 from memory. Though you can't see the front door through it, it's great for cross-ventilation! (We're in Sydney too). You can google for the retractable doors in Sydney and come up with a few suppliers, but they're not security doors. We had a dark brown frame on our door, which works in quite well with the dark brown wooden door, but isn't ideal. . . I can take a photo if you like tomorrow (if I remember) and give you the contact details of the guy that did it. Re: Security screen for a 1200mm timber front door 6Mar 17, 2012 11:10 pm Jodge, you're so helpful...source of information... Anyway, Onewheel, I'm thinking to get it too, so this thread is gonna be very useful for everyone looks like. Security screen for a 1200mm timber front door 8Mar 17, 2012 11:16 pm My mum was looking for one a few years ago and all she could find was timber screen doors not security doors so she ended up with a timber screen door, as she wanted the look more then security. I have been looking at security doors for our home and with my searches have only found decorative timber screens. I have been looking at security doors for our home and with my searches have only found decorative timber screens. Well, I have to agree with your mum, Jas, the look is now more important... Security door can't prevent someone from going to our house anyway, if they have "that" intention, then they will choose other doors/windows that's not obvious. Front door is not really a good option for them I guess...Maybe laundry and sliding door at the back are more convenient for them... My apartment got robbed through the sliding door at the back. They jumped thru the back verandah, broke the sliding glass door, and covered the hole with umbrella so no one who live behind our apartment can see the glass hole.... Re: Security screen for a 1200mm timber front door 11Mar 18, 2012 7:58 am jodge we had to put a metal screen on our front door for bushfire regulations. We are in a bush fire area too so looks like we will need a metal screen anyway. willcres They jumped thru the back verandah, broke the sliding glass door, and covered the hole with umbrella so no one who live behind our apartment can see the glass hole.... That happened to my sister in law too. If they want to break in they will find away. Our house package includes an alarm plus hoping our dog barking will deter any robberies (dog is a real softy but barks at any sign of someone arriving at the house). Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I am after a security screen so when we are home we can open the door but still feel there is a bit of security. But when the door is closed, I want a security door that blends in with the timber front door. I have seen quite a few houses with a timber door and door frame, then they have a different coloured screen door, which to me looks like it was included as an after thought and not really complementing the house. I have spent a bit of time now "googling" and found some products that do have a "timber look" aluminium frame. Will make some phone calls to check during the week and see how I go. But it seems there are some products out there. Won't need to worry about it for a year, we probably won't start building til June. But I just wanted to know that we could get a timber look one, otherwise needed to change my colour selection asap to match the screen door colour as we are finalising that now. Melbourne West Our build viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34169 Landscaping viewtopic.php?f=19&t=51147 Security screen for a 1200mm timber front door 13Mar 18, 2012 12:48 pm We have the same front door, stained and we then have a Crimsafe security screen as well. We ended up getting the screen the same colour as the window frames (dark anotec grey). Downside with the width is we need a bar across the middle to prevent bowing (all brands that quoted said the same thing). They lined up the bar with one of panels in the door, so when closed we didn't have a double line. Other thing we had to do was have the screen boxed out as we have a pull handle (protrudes out further than a standard lever type door handle). It isn't too noticeable. It is a shame to have the door covered, but we live near the ocean and the breezes that come from that direction are beautiful, it would be a shame not to take advantage of them. --------------------- Sent from my mobile device so please excuse my typing missed cakes. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Security screen for a 1200mm timber front door 14Mar 18, 2012 12:56 pm Here is a pic for you to get an idea. Not sure if this shows it very well, but this is the slight boxing out of the frame they had to do. Excellent, I looked at the crimsafe website but must have missed it. Will look again. ESB Here is a pic for you to get an idea. Thanks for the pics. I see what you mean, great idea for the bar to be lined up with the door, I must say it is hard to see. Will get DH on the phone tomorrow to find out more. He is the one who really wants the screen door, so I say he can do the ring around!! Will let you know what I find out. We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! I managed to find a screen guy who was able to provide an aluminium frame in a wood like timber colour that I wanted which closely matched our timber stained door. Here are a couple of pics I also received a 2nd quote who also did these types of frames for screen doors as well. I was told by each supplier that more and more people are requesting this type of frame for screen doors, so it is now becoming quite popular. I am pretty happy with the result We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! Looks very similar to what we are considering at the moment. I see there was no need to go with the central horizontal bar. Is there no problem with flexing/bowing/strength? Would be interested in knowing where you obtained this door if you wouldn't mind? PM if you think it would be better. Therefore the door is pretty strong, due to the size of the door it has a tripple lock system. I'll PM the details of who we used. We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in!
