Browse Forums Windows & Doors Re: Sound - Secondary Glazing on outside? 2Feb 15, 2012 11:58 am wwwhome1 Hi, most secondary glazing is recommended to go on the inside, but what is the difference if it is on the outside flush with the bricks. My objective is sound proofing without looking too obvious on the inside (road noise around 60db). So I would have a new casement hinged windows on the outside flush with the brickwork, then a 100mm gap, then the old window, then existing Venetians. The reveal on the inside is 110 and the brick reveal on the outside is 100mm. Existing windows are aluminium sliding circa 1980's. Thanks in advance if you can help with my questions! 1. Sound deadening differences 2. Cost to install 3. More difficult/costly to install a 10mm thick glass casement on the outside rather than inside (or are sliders the way to go on the inside - I have read casement v sliders is around 45 v 33 stc). 4. What do you reckon the installed cost would be for 5 of 90x130 windows in Sydney. 5. If I have to install inside, do you have a link or opinion for 10mm magnetite(acrylic) versus 10mm laminated glass performance and cost wise for sound? Casement to outside sounds like a good solution... check your seals on your existing windows are sound. I would use double glazed casements and expect a huge improvement - maybe additional STC 35 - STC 41 (doesn't really matter as you are adding secondary glazing - so benefit will be huge). You will need to make sure the new windows are sealed against the brickwork. I don't think cost of installation would be so high - guessing $200 - $500/window as a neat finish will be required. Just add a quoted price for windows. Be careful with the window design you choose... you don't want an offset reveal, it may not be so good acoustically and finish on the outside could be ugly. Your solution better than acrylic. Laminated adds a small gain, not so much to worry about.
