Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 07, 2012 9:51 pm Hi all, I'm seeking some opinions on the pros and cons of going for wide windows on our new house, would really appreciate any comments, especially from the window experts on here. So we're currently trying to finalise the house plans with the builder, and one of the changes we've made is to the front windows on the facade. The original windows on our facade are tall double-hung ones, and we've changed them to horizontal awnings. But we now have 2 options - the 1.8m wide awning windows, or the 2.1m wide ones. Both are 1.8m tall. The seemingly-trivial issue that I'm grappling with, is whether to go for the 1.8m wide awnings, or the 2.1m. The way I look at it, there are 2 factors I should consider - aesthetics and practical functionality. I'm mainly posting here to get some opinions on the practical considerations. Is there anything I need to take into account when considering which to go for? Are 2.1m-wide awning windows inherently weaker or less robust than 1.8m-wide ones? Or perhaps harder to get window furnishings for later on, maybe because they are a less-common size? One thing I should mention - the facade faces south, so I understand that wider windows mean higher heat loss during winter. To be honest I'm not sure how much the extra 0.5 sqm in glazing will cost me (0.3m x 1.8m), so happy to be educated here. In terms of aesthetics I don't think there's a huge difference, though we are leaning towards the 2.1m-wide ones being slightly better-looking at the moment. Feel free to voice your opinion on this as well. Re: Awning windows - 2.1m vs 1.8m wide? 2Feb 10, 2012 4:52 pm Just a thought if you want to change the blinds at a later date say for instance from major hardware stores the standard sizes are - 900mm, 1200mm, 1500mm & 1800mm. Therefore 2100mm will need custom made blinds... Re: Awning windows - 2.1m vs 1.8m wide? 3Feb 10, 2012 7:19 pm We have just had similiar windows installed, ours are 2.4m, currently both our windows are 2.4m however the front downstairs living should be 3m I hadn't thought about strength, I assume that to meet Australian standards they should be fine. I personally think 1.8 would be too small across that wall, how wide is your wall?? I have attached a photo showing the 2.4m (our front downstairs wall is 4m wide to give you an idea) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Awning windows - 2.1m vs 1.8m wide? 5Feb 12, 2012 12:04 am Thanks for the replies guys. foc1 - that's a good point, I hadn't realised standard in-store blinds might be limited to 1.8m wide. I'll have to check them out, not yet sure how important that is to us. gogo65 how wide is your wall?? gogo65 - our front wall is 3.2m wide up to the feature column (shown in white in the mockups), but upstairs it's 4.3m end-to-end, because the feature column doesn't extend all the way up. (Probably only makes sense by looking at the pictures in my previous post.) Thanks for attaching your pic by the way. 4 14258 Hi, Seeking volume or semi-custom builder in victoria(east), which have existing double story wide floor plans.
