Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 05, 2012 7:48 pm After some ideas and opinions, please? We are building a red brick single story double gable home in a Cal Bungalow style. We have double hung timber windows at the front, timber awning windows down the sides and across the back, as well as two sets of timber french doors with fixed panels on either side. All the window frames are timber. Initially we had planned to have the windows and french doors painted on the exterior - but now it's in I am really loving it as is, so am considering staining / sealing / varnishing / whatever it is one does with timber windows and doors. My questions are: 1.) What does one do to protect timber framed windows if you're not painting? E.g. I don't want to ask to have them varnished if they're usually painted with clear lacquer or something instead! 2.) I am hoping to leave my options open that if a later time we decide to paint the frames it's not going to be a drama - so I'd prefer something which is compatible with this. 3.) Finally while the frames are all under eaves, they were expensive so longevity is an issue, too. I don't want to do something and find in 5 years I need new frames due to not enough weather protection. We had to get a more expensive grade due to fire regulations, if that makes a difference? Would appreciate any insight or thoughts on the issue! Timber window frames - paint or stain or other? 2Feb 07, 2012 11:08 am Hi, obviously there will be more maintenance with them stained, but even painting them you'll have alot more maintenance than aluminum windows. But in my opinion, it would be so worth having them stained, it would look absolutely stunning! Re: Timber window frames - paint or stain or other? 3Feb 11, 2012 12:18 pm Thanks, Selina - I think we are going to stain them! They are well protected by eaves, so I am hoping maintenance won't be TOO bad Fingers crossed!
