Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 04, 2012 10:31 pm I’m really concerned about those ads that apparently infer that criminals, who break into homes, are noisy and stupid when trying to brake through one of these crimin al safe security screens, by using a blunt object... The stainless steel mesh, security screens that I’ve experimented with are Not welded mesh wire but are, unfortunately, thin woven wire mesh & that's the problem, “ Woven”. It is So easy to go and buy a standard a pair of tinsnips from Bunning's Hardware and by using one pointed end of the snipers you can easily twist and pry apart a small hole into the woven mesh, then start snipping one wire at a time and in about 5 seconds you can make a 20 mm cut that fits one whole tin snip blade through. That then gets you going very quickly so that you’re able to cut a 100mm slit into the mesh and then basically it is so easy to keep cutting. In about 2 minutes I can cut a 500mm diameter hole,or a large hole in any shape. These woven almost invisible, see thorough screens are giving people a false sense of security. These doors should still have some sort of extra metal added to it, behind the screen. like, properly anchored old style aluminium Amplimesh or even a minimal or decorative looking amount of 5mm S/S steel bars, that is, or at least looks like it is a lot harder to get into, once the screen has been cut. Actually, Bunnings do sell (or used to sell) a cheap security screen door that is made of 1mm steel sheet that has 3mm holes punched into it, at close proximity. These screen doors are made of Chinese mild steel but you can’t cut or bash your way through that door. See through, criminal safe "security" screens 2Feb 05, 2012 5:41 am I think that as with most home security, screens see meant to act mainly as a deterrent - to make your house look "too hard" so that hopefully they will go rob your neighbours instead . Even two or three minutes standing at a window with cutters is two or three minutes where they could be discovered. You are right of course, the advertising is very dramatic and designed to sell screens, however I would have thought that their main benefit was to give some security while you are at home with the window open. If you are out, then a thief will probably come in through the roof or force a lock. If you really want to secure your home then you need to asses all possible points of entry and address them all. Paul Re: See through, criminal safe "security" screens 3Feb 05, 2012 11:56 am If I'm a criminal, why go through all the 2 minute effort of breaking through a steel mesh, when it only takes 0.5 seconds to smash a glass window with a primitive flower pot? My neighbor's window was smashed over the christmas holiday period while they were away (stupid facebook status update probably). 5 of us were at home. Nobody heard a thing. Neither did any of the neighbors who were at home. Hi When it rains in a particular direction water comes through the security door. It hits the main door and the bottom swells and jams.
