Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 20, 2012 2:28 pm Hi, So I live in an old weatherboard house about 90 years old that is made of timber frame. Lucky (not) we live on the same road as a bus depot and have buses roaring past all day and night. My wife and I are looking at getting double glazed windows installed however how much noise reduction would this actually provide? I'm afraid that as our house isn't double brick there will still be noise pollution coming through the house walls themselves, or does the noise mainly come through the windows? Thanks Scott Re: Double glazing - old timber frame house 2Jan 23, 2012 11:37 pm Hello Scott, The primary determinant of acoustic performance in windows is glass thickness. The thicker the glass, the better the acoustic insulation. At the same time, thicker glass is more expensive. Secondly, the bigger the air - gap, the better the acoustic insulation will be. Sometimes, when the air-gap is precious little, it is better to just get a really thick single piece of glass and forgo double glazing eg with 4mm/ 6 air/ 4mm - just get 12.38mm single pane of glass (or thicker). Sometimes, people opt for secondary windows to maximise the air-gap. Thirdly, some windows have better intrinsic performance characteristics than others, in particular presence of acoustic (rubber seal); and holding glazing constant, such windows will outperform windows that have no sealing or thin mohair brushes. Any double glazing with thick acoustic glass, such as at a minimum 6.38/ 24mm air/ 6.38 will give you a substantial improvement in acoustic comfort to what you have now. Even better results - a dramatic improvement, can be achieved with thicker glazing option, such as 10.38/ 16mm air/8.38. And, if money no object, then 12.38/70mmair/8.38 is also available. It is also possible to have glass that has a thicker laminate layer eg 8.76 instead of 8.38. Windows that have been tested to achieve a certain level of acoustic performance will have STC ratings. Most of our new customers report any of our acoustic windows rated between 42STC - 50STC, perform beyond their expectations. I see you are in Sydney. What sort of cost am I looking at per m2 of double glazing? I am put off by people telling me it's going to cost $10k for double glazing around 9 windows. This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 8021 This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows. As the builder indicated, he's worked on many upmarket builds, these were the most well… 13 19241 Current door width is approx 2700, looking to have double doors fitted 820-820.
