Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Dec 08, 2011 12:08 pm I had orignally posed this in bathrooms/laundry but think it might be more appropriate here.... Okay so i didn't think about this carefully enough at time we designed the house but going through on a site visit yesterday it was all too clear we need some privacy screening for the bathroom windows. In both our ensuite and main bathroom we have regular glass. In the display home there were plantation shutters and they looked lovely but I'm wondering what is really the best option here? Where would they rank in cost? For example if it's actually cheaper to install new frosted glass than get plantation shutters I think this would be the way to go And longevity? Would a film on the glass only last a very short time and have to be redone? here are some pics the ensuite http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yRGCXHXcPSg/Tt3Fd0C9PQI/AAAAAAAAAYc/p8TbydpOd0I/s1600/_DSC0667.JPG the bathroom http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G4t8_vZM3-E/Tt3GxlyJzTI/AAAAAAAAAYo/26z9HO24LEs/s1600/_DSC0668.JPG Re: Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 2Dec 08, 2011 12:13 pm I think white plantation shutters would look lovely, bear in mind though they are VERY expensive (about $900 a sqm) Have to say I love your tiling too My building thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36059 Paid initial deposit 24/7/10 Tender appointment 20/8/2010 Flooring and tile appointment 25/9/10 Colour and Electrical appointment 13/9/10 December site start delayed Site start (YAY!) 17/1/11 Slab pour 1/2/2011 Re: Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 3Dec 14, 2011 7:07 pm I'm a bit surprised your council approved the plans without privacy glass in these wet areas. If there's limited opportunities for others (neighbours and visitors) to look-in and you like the clear glass go for the plantation shutters. If privacy is a problem your best bet is to install obscure glass. Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 4Dec 14, 2011 8:00 pm You can get duo roller blinds, one blockout and one sunscreen that lets you see out but others can't see in (except at night with lights on but that's when u pull down the blockout). Re: Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 5Dec 15, 2011 9:42 am I agree that plantation shutters would look nice however they are quite exy and also I don't know how they'd cope in a wet area over the long term (ie: how they would cope with steam and/or being splashed). Further they would cut down on the amount of light you get coming in through the windows. I'd have similar concerns about any other type of blind as well; even with exhaust fans on bathrooms can get quite steamy and that could cause problems with any blinds (particularly the one you would have over the bath in the main bathroom). I think the option of replacing the glass would also be a bit costly and wasteful. So (IMHO) your best bet is to go for some frosting film; you can either buy it from a hardware store and DIY or get it done professionally. If you are concerned about the longevity factor perhaps getting it done by a professional (who would no doubt offer a warranty) is your best bet. Good luck Re: Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 6Dec 15, 2011 9:53 am Theyetti, council where I live will approve clear glass as one of my neighbours has a floor length window 'next' to the loo...you can literally sit on the loo and watch your garden grow!! It was also visible from the street as well as neighbours. The owners fitted a white plantation shutter but as mentioned that would be expensive and possibly defeat the purpose. Otoh, when I on a few acres some years ago, I had to send a note of explanation with the plans to council stating why I wanted clear glass in the bathrooms...no neighbours for miles and we had a beautiful view that I wanted to look at while in the shower. That was a different council but they normally didn't approve clear glass in bathrooms etc. How times change? Re: Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 8Dec 20, 2011 12:16 pm When we moved into our current house it had large, clear glass windows in the bathroom. Given the fence was only a metre away from the windows, and the neighbour's house another metre, that was a bit too weird for us. I had a friend who tints car windows come over and install obscure film on the windows. Was quite cheap, and still looks great 6 years on. Re: Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 9Dec 20, 2011 12:28 pm Have you thought about obscure glass louvres? Best for privacy, and natural ventilation. Re: Bathroom windows - exposed - best solution for privacy 10Dec 24, 2011 8:15 am We have similar situation - we have exposed windows in all 3 of our wet areas (bathroom, powder room, ensuite). Powder room and ensuite are in front of the house and facing street. For these areas we are simply using windows with maximum tint and "mirror" effect from the outside. I've checked it - you really cant see anything from the outside, even from half a meter. However it works well only during day-light. During the night-time we'll be using ordinary blinds.
