Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Nov 24, 2011 12:06 am Hi All Hoping someone can help me. We are in the very very early stages of a planning a new house. We are building in a heritage area and even though we dont have to comply with a heritage overlay we really love the look of the old houses in the area and would like to replicate that style in our new build. Therefore to our front elevation we were thinking of adding oldstyle leadlight windows. But where or how do we go about sourcing that sort of thing, do we need to rummage through the salvage yards in the hope of finding what we want or can we get them made new (to look old). Hoping someone can shed some light for us Thanks Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 2Nov 24, 2011 6:48 am HI I'm not sure which part of the SW you are in. you may be able to source someone who makes them. But they maybe too modern a design. Google for stained glass images and see what you can find. There is a lady in Balingup who does them, and I'm sure plenty of others around the SW. There was a stained glass class that ran in Bunbury at the arts centre 2 years ago. Might still be running. The course co-ordinator might have some contacts. Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 3Nov 26, 2011 2:46 pm Thanks Kexkez, we are in Bunbury so will definately contact the Arts centre. If not I will call around the salvage yards in Perth and also contact the window company in Bunbury that specilises in wood frame windows. I sure someone will be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks for your help Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 4Nov 26, 2011 3:03 pm I'd be more inclined to have new stained glass in new timber frames, unless you have a special reason for using old window frames. It's easy enough to remove the clear glass and insert the leadlight...or you can also put the leadlight behind the clear glass for added protection. There are heaps of designs, either traditional or contemporary, available but if you contact the Arts centre and enquire about classes you could make your own. It's not really hard but can be time consuming and expensive if you want some of the specialised glasses. I did a course many years ago and made a shade for a pendant lamp to hang in a new house we had just built, then a feature design panel that was placed behind a clear glass window and a few other bits 'n pieces. Also repaired some antique panels for a friend then in my last house the leadlight panel beside the front door was poorly made and leaked water so I was able to repair that and re-colour some of the glass that didn't match my colour scheme. Here's a couple of sites with photos of traditional and contemporary designs... <http://tinyurl.com/bopseuc> <http://www.freepatternsforstainedglass.com/> If you want to have a go yourself I'd suggest making a couple of smaller items first so you get the hang of it and if there are mistakes it won't matter, then by the time you are ready to tackle the window panels it will be much easier. Have fun!! Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 5Nov 26, 2011 4:53 pm might have been the stirling centre for that stained glass class. not 100% as I don't know bunbury well. And thinking about it , it might have been more like 3- 3 1/2 years ago. However it did seem to be an ongoing class not a one off set of weeks. we've been here 4 years so it is less than that as I was interested in doing the course until I realised it wasn't practical for me to do so. Someone is sure to know though. Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 6Nov 27, 2011 1:55 pm Charnley Hi All Hoping someone can help me. We are in the very very early stages of a planning a new house. Hoping someone can shed some light for us Thanks Ebay often have old stained glass windows at a fraction of the cost, to either make yourself or buy from a recycler You are then of course stuck with the size of windows offered, we've bought a couple from Ebay and been extremely happy with the windows bought, but we were very flexible with size. I've since done a leadlight course, and made some art deco windows for the dormer windows of our existing garage. Once you've learnt the basics if you keep going to class the instructor will help you if you run into difficulties and making sure the window is sturdy and water tight. You can also have them made double glazed as well I enjoyed it so much have made a few other things but it isn't a cheap hobby as the glass can be quite costly depending upon colour, amount and type of glass used I applaud you for wanting to fit into the style of the area you've chosen to live! Good luck Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 7Nov 27, 2011 6:22 pm HI FernGully. sadly things like stained glass and nice furniture rarely come up for sale on ebay in WA. I've seen some amazing stuff on ebay from the east coast but not much at all here in WA. I agree though. Most instructors will happily show you how to complete a project and help you out with difficulties if you are part of their class. Imagine the pride you'd feel knowing you'd made them yourself! This was one of the reasons I discovered/ investigated classes around Bunbury. We intend to eventually replace the glass in our laundry door with lead light glass. Damn, well I hope you have a go and design something stunning Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 9Nov 27, 2011 10:57 pm Thanks all for your help. Hubby can actually do leadlight, he has made front doors etc in the past, however we are looking at all options as i know time will end up being a factor with full time work and young kids & teenagers the time just disappears . We are looking to do art deco style so no stained colours glass but definatley clear and patterned glass. Just waiting to get the place settled and then we can get the ball rolling Re: Old Leadlight Wiindows 10Nov 27, 2011 11:54 pm Charnley Thanks all for your help. Just waiting to get the place settled and then we can get the ball rolling I love art deco and did mine with different textured glass - with a tiny piece of colour which here in Victoria was fairly typical, I was pleased with the result and hope you will be pleased with yours, what ever you decide to do Is it possible to render an old corrugated iron shed.I have heard that it can be done if it is covered with chicken wire first. Not sure of the ratio of the render mix and… 0 4896 Thanks Chippy,I do have one that I levered out.
