Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 26, 2011 1:40 pm I have just recently moved into a new home and am a bit confused with the sliding window design for water drainage. There are three small vents on the outside of each window which the builder tells me are for water drainage. My question is how open should those vents be ? Should it just be a small slit with most of the vent closed ? The reason is that the bathroom window track did not seem to be draining after we had some rain. My husband used a small screw driver and hammer and gently knocked them and the water started draining. We checked the other vents and he seemed to think they were ok, but to me there is only a very small slit for water to drain from. Is this correct ? Also, there is a rubber strip that runs on the inside track of the sliding window. The builder told me to use a paper clip to lift the rubber off the track occasionally as over a period of time the rubber can stick to the track. In my last house there was no rubber on the track and the small vents for drainage could be easily seen from the inside. Naturally they had to be periodically cleaned, but I never had an issue with them. I really think this is a silly design, but the window company tell me it is all part of new standards and supposed to assist with cold air blowing in etc.. Well, that's fine but I also don't want my tracks filling up with water when the rain hits the window and I am not home to check them. Can anyone assist me with this query or does anyone else have the same design on their windows ? The drain holes need to be big enough to cope with rain in the track. Try filling the track with water to see if it drains away. They can easily get blocked from construction dirt etc...
