Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 24, 2011 2:03 pm Hi, We are finalising the details for our southwest facing house being built in Gosnells, Western Australia. I have just been quoted over $7000 for Comfort Plus windows. I want to build a home that is as energy efficient as possible, but dont want to waste money installing these windows where they are not needed. Our house has a 1.5m wide veranda covering the southeast to southwest facing windows and we are hoping to have a vergola or something similar installed over some of the northwest facing windows. As such would we really only need Comfort Plus windows on those northwest, northeast and southwest facing windows that aren't shaded? Your help would be appreciated as all of the info on the net confuses the cr*p out of me! Re: Comfort Plus Windows in Western Australia 2Aug 24, 2011 7:18 pm IMO... ComfortPlus will be a waste (and possibly a liability) in single glazed. It does not work on conducted heat, which is the massive majority of heat loss. It has the tendency to fracture from thermal shock, it is difficult to clean and damages easily. But it is excellent at stopping solar heat gain. I suggest if you can't afford double glazing right through, then double glaze the unshaded windows including Low-E instead of ComfortPlus (better performing and not laminated). I think that would add about $60/m2 to the windows. You only need Low-E (ComfortPlus) where the sun will shine directly into the home or is reflected into the home. I have been window cleaning for 12 yrs now and have seen the Etec, Comfort plus glazing in many homes. It is one of the hardest glass to clean. If not covered up whilest a reno or new build is going on, it can be contaminated with other trades mess being, paint, silicone. If this occurs your local professional cant use his tools of trade. The scraper or fine grade steel wool. ( check cleaning requirement on most web sites, its impossible ) The biggest point to make about this glass is that it has a blue/purple tinge of color throught it that looks awful when viewed from an angle. Invest in double glazing. You wont regret it. Good Luck. Cool Hand Luke I’m restoring all my 40yr old windows and I want to install seals around the casements.
