Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 09, 2011 2:07 pm Hi all, long time reader, 1st time poster!!! We have just got back 3 window quotes for double glazed windows and sliding doors throughout the whole house. (2 almost identical quotes and the other significantly higher). The highest quote includes a double glazed corner window (I think it is called a butt join??). The other companies say they don't do double glazing to corner windows. Does anyone have a double glazed corner window? Also, does anyone know the problems associated with double glazed corner windows? We have a west facing facade with very few windows and would really like to do a 'special' window to add a bit of interest to the facade. It seems silly putting double glazed everywhere else but single on the windows that face the street noise and are on the north/west corner. Ed, I always like what you have to say, you might be able to help me out. Thanks, Rocketship Re: Double Glazing a corner window 2Aug 12, 2011 11:01 am Butt joining two double glazed panes is do-able but not pretty. Butt joins are specified to acheive an unbroken view with no visual interuptions. The edges of double glazed units are very visible and usually have a black strip the entire thickness of the unit. This strip can be hidden with internal and external angles that are siliconed on purely to improve the aesthetics. However this solution is a far cry visually, from a single-glazed silicone-butt join. Perhaps you could use single glazed performance glass for this window alone, while keeping the rest as double glazed??? Good luck. Re: Double Glazing a corner window 3Aug 12, 2011 3:22 pm Thanks so much for your reply. I suspected it might not be as simple as just silicone along both pieces. We have 3 altogether - Single glazed performance glass would be a great idea for the north/east corner (thanks for suggestion) - it is a 2nd living area that has a great view but the other 2 windows are both north/west corners and facing the street. Double glazing would help with noise reduction.... is there any performance glass that would do this?? It isn't a busy street so maybe we should just forget the noise reduction factor??? Re: Double Glazing a corner window 4Aug 13, 2011 7:30 pm We have done it on several occasions and it looks realy tidy Inside a 15/15 angle and outside a 40/40 angle. And absolutly no visible silicon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It requires a skilled tradesperson with a tidy workmanship. You will never get a good result with single glazing especially with a corner window Change is what we need! Can we? YES WE CAN!!!!! Re: Double Glazing a corner window 5Aug 19, 2011 11:37 am Why not try 10mm Laminated Glass or 6.5 Vlam (Hush Glass). Re: Double Glazing a corner window 6Nov 09, 2011 8:48 am One possibility is to use regular single glazing and then secondary glaze. ecoGlaze secondary glazing looks really good in this situation and performs like good quality double glazing thermally. Not as good acoustically. This glass or laminated glass is good for acoustic purposes but does very little for thermal performance. Download per performance tables from Veridian Glass as see for yourself. This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
