Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 31, 2011 4:58 pm Hi, I'm about to install western red cedar windows and doors as part of a house renovation. We live in Sydney about 10 mins from the ocean. What's a good finish that will show the nice timber grain but protect the timber from the elements? And how often would it need to be reapplied? thanks, Bernard Re: What's a good finish for western red cedar windows? 2Aug 01, 2011 11:32 am There are a number of products available. The main thing is that you apply a three coat finish BEFORE installation and glazing. The biggest mistake you can make is installing a product with no finish on it. Ideally the finish is done in the factory environment. Painting on site is never the same quality and more expensive. The lifespan of the window is depending how well it is done from the beginning. Change is what we need! Can we? YES WE CAN!!!!! Re: What's a good finish for western red cedar windows? 3Aug 01, 2011 1:03 pm I have never seen a clear coat product that show the lovely texture of the timber that lasts more than a few years in the elements. The salespeople will say it will last, the can will say it will last, but reality is it won't ! You will then have to re apply every few years. As a painter I recommend to my clients for external use, put on an oil based enamel. Re: What's a good finish for western red cedar windows? 4Aug 01, 2011 1:28 pm Of course you can't use clear on the outside. You need some pigmentation to protect the timber from UV. It weakens the grain but it doesn't disappear. Nowadays there dedicated products for joinery like SIKKENS and they are waterbased like most paints. And if you apply 3 coats of with a spraygun in the factory you have a good surface which needs naturally to be refreshed over time. If you paint it on site you don't achive the required thickness of the coat and not the same quality. Change is what we need! Can we? YES WE CAN!!!!!
