Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 26, 2011 6:13 pm We have a new house for us with windows from the early 80s in double brick (Perth). All windows and doors need "servicing".(no idea for costs) There are no security screens at the moment and a lot of glass doors and windows. To fit all windows with security screens (crimsafe) cost $10 000. To put safety/security film on is another $5000 approx. Am I better off trying to put new windows in? ( I was think perhaps double glazing as it is harder to break in?) I have looked all over the web and have not found much information on the ease of replacing windows and what it costs. If I do put double glazing in...do I need to do a degree to understand what I am buying? Any ballpark figures on what it costs in Perth for double glazing? How hard is it to break in? Thanks. Re: Security - double glazing versus old windows? 2Aug 01, 2011 2:08 pm Double glazing wont make it harder to break in at all. Its still glass and a brick will go through it quite easily. Double glazing will reduce energy consumption and security screens like crimsafe will make it harder to get it. $10k is a lot of money for screen though. how many windows and what size? I would get quotes for replacement windows, and make them double glazed as they will add value over time, all you want is clear glass in a frame that has a U value as close to 3.5 as you can get in aluminium and 3 in timber (that's whole window value). Safety/security film won't help security, but may be safer the glass is broken. Security screens to all windows is the norm in Qld, but is there a real issue with break-ins in Perth? Perth seems to cost more than the eastern states, so I can't help on cost. But I think not so difficult in double brick. Also we use inside glazing beads only. Not sure whether the "prison feel" of those security screens would be my cup of tea? Do they have a kind of quick release in case of emergency egress? Change is what we need! Can we? YES WE CAN!!!!! This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
