Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 13, 2011 12:07 am So not being a door expert i am a bit puzzled that i cant find what i want!!!!!! We have two doors from our garage, one goes into the house and the other goes into the back courtyard. They both need to be locked but i cant find handles that match my door handles. Initially we thought we could put a lock on but there isnt two of those hole things in the door frame. What can we do, apart from getting an ugly handle i dont like! Your wisdom is appreciated!!! Re: lockable door handles 2Apr 13, 2011 12:45 am I too am not a door expert at all, but I think that you should be able to get a new deadlock with a matching strike plate (ie. the hole thing in the door frame ), that will also have a section on the strike plate that allows for a normal door handle to fit into. That way you could have a deadlock along with a door handle that matches your current internal handles. I would suggest getting an internal door handle without a privacy lock (ie. the kind that you would find on an ensuite etc) for your garage, as privacy locks are not made for security and would only tempt people into snibbing the privacy lock shut without using the deadlock, and that wouldn't stop any half-determined person from getting in. Having a deadlock only would mean you would always have to keylock the door rather than being able to snib it, but this is a common thing that most of my clients now do in their new homes so that they can have matching garage and internal door handles. It all comes down to whether it's possible to find a strike plate that allows you to do all this and will still fit into your door frame. Re: lockable door handles 3Apr 14, 2011 7:13 am It is very easy to get a dead bolt installed (as well as keeping the current door handle you use on your other internal doors). Any lock smith you get to come and do this (advisable as then you can have the key cut to match your existing front door locks) should be able to put a second 'hole thing' into the door frame. Basically all they will do is drill a hole that will fit the dead bolt (in the locked position) and then put the strike plate over it. Not all deadbolts need to be locked using the key but deadbolts are much more preferable to privacy locks. We’re not too fussed about people… 4 1302 Black on light wood does look good. Not sure if it will be as long lasting as a steel finish? 6 6356 |
