Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Apr 10, 2011 10:45 am Hi We have a limited budget for building our house and have considered buying second hand windows so we don't have to miss out on a nice timber window for our facade. Is there anything we should consider or look out for when purchasing a second hand timber window? We found one that we love which is an old 1950's double hung window - any tips, recommendations or ideas on this type of window? We also like the old timber awning windows from around the 1960's - 1970's. We have noticed a lot of these windows very reasonably priced on ebay but would like some more advice before we start buying. Is this something we should discuss with our builder before we buy or would the builder be able to incorporate a second hand window as easily as a new window? Thanks Building in Bacchus Re: Buying Second-hand Windows 3Apr 13, 2011 4:39 pm I can't see any disadvantage to your builder in using secondhand timber windows. Make sure they are operable, especially double hung with the sash balance. You may need to clean up any old nails etc. for safety's sake, and your builder may prefer you to paint them if they are covered in old paint. They effectively have an inline reveal so the timber house frame and brick opening are the same.
