Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 02, 2011 12:54 pm Hi guys, We want to install sliding doors on one of our wardrobes. At the same time, we don't want to do any painting on the doors installed. Therefore, melamine or vinyl will be the choice. Could anyone explain to me PROS and CONS of each material. I've heard about vinyl that it covers plaster/gyprock and is 'less durable' than melamine, but there are other factors to consider, like: easiness of cleaning/maintenance and sliding, etc. Please let me know about your views and experiences. Thanks, afaq05 Re: Melamine vs Vinyl Sliding Doors 2Mar 11, 2011 10:00 am A melamine sliding door is cheaper than a vinyl door. A melamine door cant have a pattern routered into the face of the door but a vinyl door can. Melamine and vinyl doors are both easy to clean. Vinyl is normally glued to the underlying substrate. As a consequence, the vinyl can delaminate after a period of time. The ideal solution (if you require a pattern in the door) is to have it sprayed in a polyurethane paint finish. Re: Melamine vs Vinyl Sliding Doors 3Mar 11, 2011 10:07 am i know you said you didnt want painting, but you can also get MDF doors with one side being laminate and edging already done, so you only have to paint one surface and you can paint it the same colour as your wall/door/etc... It won't take long and will match perfectly to the existing room. You can also have patterns routed in prior to painting. One door has a tiny tear in the vinyl but I can only blame myself for that one. It just needs gluing back down again.
