I really thought that was weird, but I guess it will be more hardy? Not sure if we should just paint it, stain it or just attach a metal strip What's on the base of your front door frame? 8Mar 03, 2011 6:30 am What are your doors going to be finished in? You normally match it to the doors. Painted doors / painted frames - stained doors / stained frame. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: What's on the base of your front door frame? 9Mar 04, 2011 9:34 am The outside of my doors will be painted black and the inside will be white. If we paint the base black, it will show dust. If we paint it white it will show dirt. Really not sure what to do Re: What's on the base of your front door frame? 10Mar 04, 2011 9:45 am If your front door gets used often, as I assume it would, then dust wouldn't get that much of a chance to settle. Do we get to see pics? Re: What's on the base of your front door frame? 11Mar 04, 2011 9:50 am Blue, are you having any render near the front door, or will it be just face brick? My base plate is metal with the other 3 sides of the frame (timber) is painted black (to match the door). Our garage entrance is a full timber frame (no metal on the base) and the door is white, 3 sides of the frame are white, but the base is left natural, possibly just oiled? It looks fine, hides the dirt and wont have any chipped paint look. It is next to face bricks, though, whereas the front door is next to render. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! It is all face bricks around the front door. So will follow your advice and oil the base But the inside of the garage will be plastered and there will be no bricks. I was hoping to get more opinions from this thread. Pros and cons etc .... But oh well Re: What's on the base of your front door frame? 13Mar 04, 2011 10:26 am blueblueblue I was hoping to get more opinions from this thread. Pros and cons etc .... But oh well At the end of the day it is just the step at the door, no one is going to criticise you or pick on you for it being 'wrong' and if they do then tell them to go and get a life, there are much more important things to worry about. Once you finish your build you will look back at a lot of the things you stressed about and realise that they are not that big a deal. What I meant was, I was hoping to hear how everyone's frame base has performed after years of living in the house. I don't think anyone would criticise me or pick on me because of my front door base. LOL Re: What's on the base of your front door frame? 15Mar 04, 2011 11:01 am I can't say much about this house as we've only been in it for 18 months, but so far so good for wear and tear. I honestly would have liked a timber base plate rather than metal as it does tend to 'stick out' against the black doors and render, but that's all the builder offered! So far the garage entrance timber base has been fine. I would not have wanted it white to match the door, as all the dust would have shown up on it plus scratches. In our old house, we had grey slate tiles on the porch, and they went under the door. There was no base plate to the door frame. We then had a weather sealer 'thingy' attached to the bottom of the door, which would seal it from any water that may get in under the door. I even found a pic! Hope that helps a bit? If you do end up painting yours the same colour as the rest of the frame (black), then don't forget it will be stepped on, it will scratch and require maintenance. I haven't done anything to my garage one other than sweep and/or vac. It doesn't get any rain on it though, and not sure if your front doors are sheltered from the weather? Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... They are both sheltered from the weather. Thank you!!! Our jambs will be mdf and I am just wondering if that will be an issue (mixing mdf and timber) Re: What's on the base of your front door frame? 18Mar 31, 2011 6:58 am And our garage isn't set down for some strange reason If this makes any difference. Our jambs will be mdf and I am just wondering if that will be an issue (mixing mdf and timber) Hi Blue, From looking at the timber, the door frames in the entrance door (metal base plate) and the garage door (timber base plate) are some sort of hardwood. The wood grain is visible, even after they have been painted. I can only assume all of the internal door frames are what look like pre-primed MDF (same as the skirts and archs) as they are completely smooth and 'wood-grain free'. I'm not sure if MDF is appropriate to use for a jamb/frame on an external door? Someone else might have the answer for you, but even my laundry external door frame is timber (metal base plate). Might be worth asking at your door supplier, or chippie?? I'm not sure what they would do with the garage not set down. So is it the same floor level as your house slab? In that case, you might not have a base plate at all, but perhaps just a weather seal strip attached to the door to prevent draughts. Not sure.... have you a pic? Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ...
