Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Feb 16, 2011 11:19 pm We are currently renovating a 1980s house that we will move into and live in for hopefully the next 15yrs. As always renovating costs are blowing out However this week 2 of the sliding door locks have broken (the bolt part on top of the door) and at least 6 of the windows locks aren't working. (No security screens yet, only old flyscreens.) I know nothing about aluminium (sp) windows and doors. Am I better off: a) replacing them entirely? b) trying to get them repaired (who does this in Perth)?(both windows and locks) c) just paying for security screens ($10 000) worth for the whole house (crim safe moving part of window/door only)and not worrying about fixing any of the locks? Whilst we live in a "nice" area, security is still important. I do like to lock things!! The house is double brick if that makes any difference. As you can tell - i'm very new to all this renovating stuff and not really enjoying it at all. Any suggestions/ hints would be appreciated. TIA Re: Perth - 30yr old al windows/doors renovate? 2Feb 17, 2011 12:27 am Hi Whatalass. It sounds like the bolts on the sliding doors are aftermarket sliding security bolts. You should be able to remove these and just install new ones. Not sure if the locks on the windows are aftermarket or the original locks, you didn't mention. Often the older aluminium windows didn't have locks, just a latch that could be forced easily. That is why the older windows often had aftermarket locks installed. If they are aftermarket then you can replace these with new ones, or they may simply need a little attention to get the old ones working again. What area are you in? I think they are aftermarket bolts and locks. However with one door in particular, as the locking mechanism is broken, we have tried to take it apart so we could at least unbolt the door but to no avail. However on another door, the bolt does look like it can come apart. Both locks/bolts look different...... I might have to go to Bunnings and have a look and see what the new bolts and locks are like. Maybe that would help me to get this one on particular off. The new house (for us!) is in Daglish Re: Perth - 30yr old al windows/doors renovate? 4Feb 17, 2011 4:43 pm Nice area. If they are aftermarket then they can be removed. They may have been fixed with the anti tamper screws so removal could be more difficult. They should be easy to replace and make sure you get them all keyed the same.
